Am I infected? I.E. Keeps Freezing/Hanging

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit,

Recently tried installing Avast Free Anti-Virus, right after I uninstalled the "Free Trail" of McAfee that came with the computer.

Upon doing so, I restarted the computer after the Avast install, and almost immediately I.E. froze, spinning wheel started, could not click Windows (Start) or anything, couldn't even bring CTRL-ALT- DELETE up. Have to hard shut down and As soon as I do a system restore (in safe mode) which uninstalls Avast, it seems to be fine. Is there a virus or something blocking this?

Did you use the appropriate uninstall tool from McAfee to remove all their remnants from your System before installing Avast?

Your symptoms are indicative of 2 AV's {even remnants remaining} in conflict.
