AMD 939 Replacement Processor

Back when I bought my x2 4400+, I chose it because it has a 1GB L2 cache vs the 512MB cache on the 4600+ processor, even though it is only 2.2HHz, instead of 2.4 MHz of the 4600+. I now need to buy another processor, but I'm questioning whether I made the right decision last time? The 4600+ processors are going for about $50 more than the 4400+ units...are they worth the extra? Bottomline is which effects performance more, cache size or frequency?

yes get the bigger cache you can always overclock to get more MHz but you can't get more cache lol...

I've never gotten into overclocking, so any comparison would be based on stock figures, but I tend to agree about the value of the cache. When stepping up in the past, I never noticed much difference between two processors, even with a bigger change in frequency than this. I suppose that it would make a difference, depending on the type of apps run, but I don't think that my apps have suffered from too low of a frequency. Still, I'm trying to keep an open mind.

I think in honesty I would get away from the socket 939 it's old get a AM2 or AM2+ board you can get a basic board & CPU bundle pretty cheap

I completely agree. A while back, I was selling some old socket 939s and was very surprised to have them sell on ebay for way more than the cost of a newer and faster processor bundle. Yes, it takes a bit more work, but it's very worth it if you want more speed out of your rig.

I agree. in fact I would guess you could change platforms cheaper than youll find a 939 socket.
And the new AM2/3s are faster clock for clock as well.

As far as the original question, I agree cache size over speed if your talking something close. within a couple hundred mhz.

but if moving from something like 2.2 --> 2.8 that much extra speed will trump the cache size.
none-the-less .. IMHO, larger cache size is better overall.

I have thought about leaving 939 behind, but generally it is more expense that I'm ready to deal with. The price is right for the bundle in your link, but I have never owned a Biostar motherboard before, and when I have bought MBs in that price range, I always had problems with them...even with Asus. Besides that, it is a mini, which is short on RAM and PCI slots. Plus I would have to add the price of new RAM. Somehow, I don't feel that the benefits would out weight the limitations.

that link was just an example of what is possible I'm sure you could find a board that meets your needs as for Biostar don't worry they make great boards I use lots of them especially the T series boards all I know is i would not spend money trying to upgrade a dead platform like 939

Would your price beat those that I have found on eBay? On the average, a 4400+ = $100 shipped, and 4600+ = $150 shipped, a 4800+ = $200 shipped. Of course, I would like a faster 939 than these, but they appear to be out of my price range.

Ive purchased 2 Biostar boards for builds.
They make really good boards.
The only downside, they may not be able to Overclock quite as well as the more expensive boards.
But they are rock solid boards -- no complaints

Biostar boards overclock just fine like I said get a T series board which is what I'm running now they are better suited for overclocking

I did not remember what I had till I looked I just knew I had several 939's laying around lol

I have a socket 775 3.2 GHz Cedarmill with 2MB L2 cache here but it's single core

got a pair of Hynix DDR2 PC2 4200 512 MB x2 ram to go with that 775 CPU I would make you a deal on that would at least get you something more current
