AMD CPU Question

Hey Guys,

Okay so I've never owned a AMD CPU in any of my computer systems. I am now looking to maybe build a simple computer for my girl, all she needs it for is web surfing and web browser games. Although some one told me AMD CPU's run hotter then Intel CPU's. I was hoping some one here would be able to tell me if this is true or not. As I know that the hotter a system runs the worse the performance will be, I've found out from experience that is true the hotter a computer runs the worse the performance will be.

My experience it is the other way around not that it makes any difference as long as they are correctly cooled.
AMD are excellent processors and perfectly suitable to the job you have planned

Nahh, don't pay attention to that.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 Black Edtion on my 2nd computer, and it runs cool even on the stock cooler.

Remember, AMD's CPUs have a feature called 'AMD Cool'n'Quiet', meaning that the CPU will downclock itself when not under load to keep the CPU nice and cool (just like Intel's Speedstep).

Hi, Intel Cpu's are generally faster like for example a 2GHz quad core cpu from intel will be faster then one from AMD the difference is the price for the price of a good Intel Quad Core you can get a six core AMD Cpu which is faster. Not the case with the fastest I7s as AMD does not have CPU's that are as fast as the fastest I7's.

Having said that Temperature dos not affect AMD Cpu's the way it does Intel CPU's and that is not a problem. If you are on budget you should get an AMD Processor as they will be faster the the intels for that price if yo u are not then I7 is the answer although for general use as you said as in web browsing the I7 would never even have 50% usage so there is no point.

Basically temperature does not matter and does not have an impact on the performance if you do not overclock. I recommend Athlon II's and Phenom II's but do not recommend normal Athlons or Phenoms for performance. If you tell me your budget I will give you an example build for that price

I think an AMD processor is a good choice. I have several desktop and laptop AMDs and they run very well - since 4 years. One AMD TL58 in a laptop was a bit hot. I switched the HDD (which also produces heat) for an SSD and the problem went away. So maybe the disk was the culprit. And price wise they cannot be beat.

For everyday stuff, of course.

AMD CPUs are good for everything - just as good as Intels. It is only a question which model you choose. For the type applications you mention, anything between 2.2. and 2.5. GHZ Duo Core would be ample - gives you a bit of headroom.

We still have a 1.8GHz AMD CPU which works perfectly for daily chores. If, however, you want to do video encoding, you have to be patient.

Depends on the size of the file. But in 2007, that was all I had. My new VAIO with the i7 is nearly 10 times faster.
