AMD Dropping Support For Pre-HD 5000 Series GPUs in July

If you're still gaming on a Radeon HD-4000 series graphics card (or older) your GPU isn’t about to self-destruct, but it will fall out of mainstream support in the very near future. AMD announced today that Catalyst 12.6 will mark the end of the road for anything prior to the HD-5000 series, or to put it simply, anything that isn’t DirectX-11 compliant.

Linux support,

In what will certainly be controversial and disappointing to some Radeon Linux desktop users, AMD will soon announce that they will effectively be discontinuing support for several Radeon product families from their proprietary Catalyst driver. After that point, for future Linux distribution updates, the open-source Radeon Linux driver will be your only option for accelerated graphics. This is likely happening with the Windows Catalyst driver too, but at least there they have a better-maintained legacy driver process.

This summer, around the time of Catalyst 12.7, AMD will be dropping support for pre-Evergreen hardware from their proprietary graphics driver. This means that the Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 series will cease to be supported by the mainline driver. The support will live on in a legacy branch of Catalyst, but that branch for Linux users will not be updated with new X.Org Server and Linux kernel support.​

Unclear from reading around other forums at the moment whether the same will happen in Windows or not.

I can relate, because a few months ago I bought a 6970, so I guess I'm fine for now. I mean, the thing is so fast that right now I feel very "future-proof" (hate to use that term), but with the future bringing games like Crysis 3, Metro: Last Light, etc., well, seems like there will always eventually be more and more games coming out that will try to kill our systems.

At least for every system killer, there are 5 'butter smooths'.

It's just too bad that the system killers are the ones you usually want the most

Yeah hopefully they are optimized and not unoptimized which is what I fear for crysis 3 since it's also going to be on a console and crytek might get lazy and just port it from the xbox possibly Anyways I think my 6870 should be able to hold off for a good time. Although Metro will probably be as demanding as the prior metro Which I believe it will be. I think crysis 3 is probably going to be very similar in spec to crysis 2 don't think they are going to change much but hopefully they actually start off with putting the high resolution textures with dx11 this time instead of screwing us pc gamers over and making us wait for a patch.

I guess this means they will end driver support for newer Op systems. I use Nvidia anyway.

I like the so called machine killer games. I can eat them alive on max settings with my ancient overclocked yet extremely stable quad core machine. Crysis 2 on max settings is just too easy.

Yeah, I'm running three monitors with my 6970, and I have to tone down Metro a little bit, but that's the exception and not the norm for me. Of course, I'm not overclocking, so that might have something to do with it, too.
