This is going to have an enormous impact on the price of Intel chips...I had hoped AMD could stick it out for a few more years. It seems like this is a waving of the white flag for AMD in the desktop arena. After disappointing benchmarks from the Bulldozer series, I suppose some saw this coming. I truly hope AMD finds their niche in the processor market somewhere. My early years were all spend on AMD systems, they're solid processors.

a intel i5 @3.0ghz(4cores) beats a phenom ll x6(cores) @3.0ghz i can see why they are upset because they cant compete with the i7's hopefully they still make them though i really think there decent processors for their price

AMD was operating without a CEO back in January for the previous six months or so. Don't know if they filled the position yet but that's probably why the Bulldozer floundered for so long before hitting the market. If they have filled the position, that could be why the they're taking a different direction. As far as I'm concerned, AMD is still the top-dog in graphics chipsets. It was rumored Nvidia may be taking a new direction as well. Too much AMD for Nvidia to keep up with. Just as there's too much Intel for AMD to keep up with. It's been hard times all around but I don't think Intel would shoot themselves in the foot by over pricing. Microsoft wouldn't take that well either. MS needs to sell operating systems. One feeds on the other.

im suprised amd cards surpass nvdias cards in performance usually nvdia was top of the line the 6870 beats a gtx 560 and the 6870 is 10$usd cheaper which is why i'm getting that card instead .

I regret that AMD may go away from PCs in this fashion, because I have been a loyal client of theirs since my first computers. Since I have no interest in small devices as they seem to have targeted, I guess that my next PC build will have to be Intel, and I don't like that idea at all.

Although my current build is Intel, I've always been hoping AMD would make a big comeback & give Intel another run for their money. My previous build was an AMD Opteron175 & a few weeks after, Intel rolled out the Core 2 Duos! Until then, AMD was kicking Intel's butt.

My concern - like many of you - is how this may affect future Intel CPU prices. - But another consideration is how this may affect the push for new innovations from Intel. I always wondered if AMD had not been around for all those years, how far along would Intel's CPUs progressed to this day?

Last week, Intel reduced its fourth quarter revenue forecast along with rival chipmaker Texas Instruments, as it expects the disrupted hard drive and PC supply chain spurred from the Thailand floods to potentially hurt sales. Despite its anticipation of a bumpy last quarter, the company did report a record-setting quarterly revenue of 14.2 billion dollars in the third quarter this year and saw the highest volume of microprocessor units shipped in its history.

It's hard for AMD to compete with that. If you can't get a microprocessor to market, you can't sell it. The Bulldozer had high potential in the beginning but AMD took too long to develop it. (Over two years? Or something like that) By the time it was ready to release, Intel was already waiting with a counter offering of a Sandy Bridge and the SB-e. Which by the way is just a tickler to what's coming.

instead of making a whole new cpu architecture thats not tried and tested they should have just got a phenom II and strapped another to it, currently faster than the bulldozer and it works. A lot of reviewers have said the same.

I haven't used or considered an AMD processor since the Athlon 64 X2 4400+. I previously had owned 5-6 AMD based machines, but they simply don't have the massive price difference anymore and performance wise they have been spanked continuously since the release of the Core 2 Duo processor. For this reason, I have built and run nothing but Intel.

As far as seeing a massive increase in the price of Intel chips, I don't see it happening. I expect them to keep coming and be priced well to boot. I'm also not terribly concerned that progress of development will slow either. Intel has been solidly putting out better products than AMD for the past 5+ years. I don't think AMD has really had any product which really forced Intel's hand to come up with something better. Heck, in the last 3 years AMD struggled to put out a product that would compete with middle of the road Intel. Seems like no matter what AMD thought up, Intel was ahead. I don't forsee them just stopping that.

I used to use an AMD Athlon... then I got an i7 PC. The Core i7 is what hooked me on Intel.

AMD is going to focus more on portable devices; day late and a dollar short. AMD should spend less time poking, suing, bad mouthing Intel and look in their AMD mirror. IMHO AMD'S problems are not external but internal. Putting Bulldozer out on the market before it was properly R&D and tested was not a Intel decision but a AMD decision and a bad one. When to try to enter a new market with a product is not a external decision but a internal AMD decision. AMD needs to spend more time looking at the internal workings of AMD and less on other companies. Hopefully that is what they are attempting to do now.
