Solved An 'Open with' window appears after login

I had to replace a failed primary drive and so did a clean install of Window 7 Home Premium.

Now, whenever I login in, an "Open with" window immediately appear on the desktop, naming 'Tom' as the file to be opened. Tom is the sole (admin) user.

When Notepad is selected to open the file, the following appears:

What is causing this? How can it be stopped?

BTW, if I choose not to open, I have to click Cancel twiice to clear the window.

I waited for someone more knowledgeable to answer your questions - but seeing no posts, I'll step in.

My guess as to what caused it:
Something barfed and wrote a log file or a part of a log file to one of the start up folders and there is no file extension on the file. Thus, every time you log in, the computer tries to open this file.

My guess as to how to stop it:

1) unhide this info: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10570-file-extensions-hide-show.html

2) unhide this too: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/394-hidden-files-folders-show-hide.html

3) look in this folder for the file or shortcut to the file that you keep seeing open:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If it is there - delete it.

4) look in this folder for the file or shortcut to the file that you keep seeing open:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If it is there - delete it.

If the file is not in either of those two places, then you might need to look in the registry for a "run entry" that is causing the file to try and open. Since this is unlikely, I'll wait to hear the results of the steps above before posting how to work with the registry.

If you opt to open the file in Notepad and then use the File > Save As feature, you can locate the offending files location - but deleting the file might not solve the whole issue if there is a shortcut pointing to it.


BTW, the only reason that I can think of for your having to press close twice to dismiss the "open with" dialog box is - the file is being opened twice or there are two such files being opened.

Sidebar,​

my problem is solved.

That is sad that Google's programers did not deal with the possibility of a space in that path. (I recently found the same issue in a script that I wrote where I did not use quotes as I should have - but I'm just a hobbyist

They're Back!

Well, immediately after a Windows Update, two 'Open With' windows again appear after log on. I checked the same location in the registry and found the same problem, missing enclosing quotes, now for for 'chromium'.

That accounts for one, but what about the second? I searched a bit further and found the same problem under ...Themesth: CurrentTheme also had missing enclosing quotes, and further, so did

AppPath under ...Google\Google Talk\Autoupdate​

InstallPath under ...Dropbox​

I also noted elsewhere there were instances where quotes might be required but were not. Certainly, there is no consistency (and no universal necessity) in their use.

then installed Dropbox using the default settings
restarting gave me no problems

what reg key did you change for dropbox?
