Android and Windows 7 tablets coming in June… Why?

Both ASUS and MSI have now announced that they will be unveiling tablet devices based on Google’s Android operating system and Windows 7 at the Computex show in June. The question that has to be asked though is why would anybody buy one?

The simple fact is that neither Android nor Windows 7 are finger-friendly tablet-oriented operating systems. Android treats every device it’s on as though it has a big desktop and is, essentially just a computer and Windows 7 is far from finger-friendly.

Apple’s iPad has proven what you should do to make a tablet device friendly and Microsoft’s own Courier concept device has been widely hailed as the way these devices really should be.

I doubt they will even come out with them! Yesterday MS pulled out of developing their courier tablet. FURTHER, HP 's iconic Slate pulled out today because of performance issue!!!

I have two Windows 7 machines that are finger-enabled. One is a netbook tablet convertible that has a single touch screen, and the other is a 20" All-In-One (AIO) with an optical dual-touch screen. Especially with the Windows 7 Multi-touch Pack, the AIO is quite finger-friendly with several usefull two-finger gestures that make things more intuitive, in my opinion. The only thing that holds finger-friendly back is that not all applications are touch aware and make the appropriate adjustments to menu, button and dialog box spacing to accomodate people like me with big stubby fingers. Even my teenage granddaughter with her relatively delicate fingers manages to fat-finger non-touch-aware menues, buttons and dialog boxes. I held back my laughter as she so deftly navigated around with her fingers on the 20" AIO, and then resorted to the keyboard and mouse when she hit a tight dialog box that defied her smaller hands.

Give it a little time for more multi-touch machines to be out in the world and there will be more applications that are fully touch aware and make it much more friendly. That is the advantage to the iPad and other Apple closed systems - they control everything and make sure all the applications are fully finger friendly as they must be.
