I have Windows 7, Build 7100, and my 9800 GT isn't showing up in the device list. It powers on perfectly, then fans run, and it works in a computer that runs Vista... so my guess is, after seeing all the problems people have been having with the 9800 GT and Win7, it must be the combination of the two. I just haven't been able to figure out why my computer refuses to recognize the card.

I have the same build with an EVGA 9800 GT and it's recognized and working fine. However, after upgrading the motherboard, memory and processor HDCP is no longer working. Not sure it's the video card but I've not spent a great deal working on it. HDCP was working fine prior to the hardware upgrade.

Sigh...

In any event your issue may very boil down to several things such as BIOS configuration (make sure the BIOS is set to use PCI alternate video first), power supply (make sure the 12V leg has enough amperage) or something else goofy with the motherboard.

It would seem that you are not the only one out of a growing group of people that are having an issue with a 9 series card and Windows 7...I think it could actually be Nvidia's faught and hopefully they will seek a resoultion to their driver. It seems the issue only affects certain types of configs...one common factor is the 9 series card

Using 2 GeForce 9800GTs in SLI

Win7 RC build 7100. GeForce video driver 182.50 on XFX nforce 680i LT motherboard working just fine.

I did have some issues with a newer driver 187.50 and backed out to 182.50 which has been very stable for me all along.

Updated:

I contacted XFX and got a bios update (721NSP08 Win7 x64 compatible version) for the 680i LT motherboard. Downloaded new Nvidia driver 190.38 for x64. System appears stable and WEI for both Aero graphics and Business graphics improved from 6.0 to 6.6 with the cards in SLI mode and PhysX on. I reasonably sure the bios update was what made the difference in the stability of the newer drivers.

I can't install latest Nvida drivers for 9800GT. I'm currently running the standard VGA? drivers. Still can't find a solution for this.

I'm on Win 7 64 bit OS, migrated from Win Xp 32 bit OS.

I have to agree with this. As a matter of fact I asked another member what's the deal with all the 8800gt's and 9800gt problems. I had 2 9800gt's and didn't experince the problems with driver installation, however I could never get them to run in SLI.

I have noticed something in common among people having trouble with 8800 and 9800 cards, Most of them seem to have "ASUS" motherboards. Don't know that this is your issue but I have run 8600's, 8800's and 9800's all in SLI and there have been no issues what so ever with my XFX nforce motherboard.

By the way....how is your bios....I had to get an updated beta bios for my motherboard for Win7 x64 compatibility (It was fine with Vista x64). Current Nvidia driver as of 10-08-09 was 191.07 which solved some issues for me as well as other people posting here on SevenForums.

Are you downloading the drivers from Nvidia or from Windows update? The ones from Windows update messed my system up and I had to back them out. Now I download them myself from Nvidia and haven't had any problems since.

yeah i've noticed that too with the ASUS motherboards. i also had the same problem with my card not working right with the windows driver update and having to back out. i've helped several people with mobile cards on asus motherboards, mine is a 9600M GT. it always came down to the subsystem ID not being defined properly in the INF files that nvidia provides. i'm not sure what the deal is with the 8800 and 9800 cards, but it may be something similar.

the key is looking for the PCI device ID in dxdiag.txt, which looks like this: "Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_040C&SUBSYS_20D917AA&REV_A1"

Add another to the list of people having problems. I'm running an ASUS P5-E Mobo and a GeForce 8600 GTS. While I don't get a black screen or anything, my video and picture resolution is rather poor on Win7 with no explanation. Same video/picture looks perfect in XP, but on Win7 it looks grainy. I've tried all different types of codec packs, players, you name it. Some people have reported downgrading the graphics drivers to solve the problem but I've yet to see this.

It's really amazing how common this problem is with the particular GeForce cards and how there is still no answer as to what's causing it. I've made several threads to no avail.

That's great Nate but it doesn't help all the others that are having problems. For those still having problems I have contacted Nvidia,XFX, Asus and gigabyte and explained each of your problems and what MB and graphic card your using as well as the driver your attempting to install. I have heard back from XFX and they are in contact with Nvidia and said they would get back to me with their reply. So Hang in their I'm trying to find a solution. Fabe
