Another Directory Naming Problem

I am trying to amalgamate a large number of documents from various sources into one directory so that each of us on the network can access them, but when the folders are viewed on the Windows 7 machine just a code appears. So a directory which should appear as 'Croggon, A.' actually appears on the Windows 7 machine as 'AE9MVP~W'. I have edited files and directories on all sorts of machines, including Linux, but I have never experienced this before.

Has anyone any ideas please?

Whatever you are using to create the directory is some ancient DOS or LINUX garbage that is not long filename aware or it's LFN implementation is broken. It's only writing the 8.3 compatible name or the long filename is illegal and it's reverting to 8.3. Why not connect the various sources to a Windows 7 "server" machine, add the connected locations to a library and share the library with the homegroup?

Never saw this ever in any Windows OS.

Are you sure the drive you are creating the folder on isn't bad?
There is a seeting, I think, in Folder Options to show 8.xxx character names, By chance to you have that option checked?

What does the folder name look like when you are on the PC that the has the drive you are creating this folder on? What does the folder name look like right after creating it?

Thanks baarod and Shootist for your replies. The original source of some of the files could well be ancient. The other 5 machines on the network are all XP so I presume that I cannot them to the Homegroup. I regret that all my server experience is with Linux; I had no say in the choice.
