I've been having trouble for months with my internet connection going down, BUT with the LAN intact. As it has started to happen several times a day I did an "InPlace Upgrade about a week ago. Did help - well maybe, now it's back to once or twice a day. Could never find anything in the event viewer or logs to show me the way.
Well after doing the upgrade, Windows did 300 updates, actually 299. IE 11 fails at the end "Restarting Programs".
I've done the SURT and there wasn't anything noted. I've renamed "SoftwareDistribution", SFC, etc.

I can get 7/8 on, but nothing higher. I don't really care if it's stuck at 8, but I'm thinking that in some abstract way that only my motherboard and Windows knows of, my network problem might be connected.

Hi RB,
internet dissconnection will cause updates to fail, and upgrades too.
please copy/post the results of this tool if its ok, i'll get you a link for W7 SP1 with IE11.
It will then need approx 50 updates.

Thanks for the reply, although I think I'm going to have to re-install GAAWWWWWD is that going to be a pain....... The system lost connection 3 times yesterday and as I went through EVERY entry in the event viewer I could find NOTHING amiss.

Anyway, what part of the results do you need, other than to see that it's legal? There seems to be some rather personal (Product Code) involved.

Hi RB,
Not surpising really.
The Office install is non-genuine, its going to a blocked server!
REMOVE IT
and as for your Retail version its in a default state, not been (re)activated
(and presumably issued via Dreamspark, ie an educational establishment)

run this kb971033.

After you have performed the above

REBOOT
and rerun the tool.

It will more than likely offer you IE11 straight away

Nope. I own it no matter what that says - still have the package.

and as for your Retail version its in a default state, not been (re)activated

That is because, as I stated, I did an "In Place Upgrade" (which I dl'd from Microsoft), to try to fix my network issues and did not activate it and wasn't going to, until I knew if it had fixed the problem (it didn't) and I had to re-install (I did/am doing a side-by-side on a different drive as I write).

(and presumably issued via Dreamspark, ie an educational establishment).

run this kb971033.

REBOOT

Is the assumption it's an activation problem?

FWIW, called MS and after proving that this Office 2003 was mine (and that I wanted to keep using it) they gave me a new number to use -they couldn't explain what happened, but all is well with MS Office 2003.

Hi RB,
having the packaging does not make it Genuine.
The key thats on it, is sending it to a non microsoft server which THEY have indentified as being suspicious, for want of a better term, and have Blocked it.
On your packaging will be another key, google the last 3 sets see what you get.

As for your OS key its in the Dreamspark range and as such shoud only be available thru colleges, if it was purchased then its highly likely to be non genuine as well.

Thats why i put it in ( )

Nope, it not an assumption its a fact that a Blocked key on the system will cause the system not to update.
You could remove Office and see what happens.
The tool you ran was issued by MS
If you want to check further.
Have a look at your CBS & windowsUpdate logs.
You will find they are returning the same issues.

Hi RB,
another edit

once you changed the key you should find the updates running smoothly,
If IE11 fails,
copy/paste the WindowsMain log, its produced automatically on a IE11 fail.

One last thing, as I've started a rebuild - the network keeps crashing so it's no use. I would though if I wasn't annoyed enough with this bloody computer, to go all the way through this to fix it.

Life interrupts.

We are going to differ on this and I certainly do NOT want any sort of arguement. Not that it matters; but having BEEN in IT since Cobol/Fortran/Cray Computer days, and having BEEN a VAR for quite some time, I can say with certainty, that I do not have ANY cracked/hacked/stolen/etc programs on any of my machines.

My OS 's number came directly from MS, as (now) did my Office.

I appreciate your help, even though it seems - now - that it was for naught. I've had to start from scratch which has presented me with 2 distinct, different problems.
