Well i am a window's 7 user as of about three hours ago. However whenever I go to install something such as google chrome, or bittorrent I keep getting the same error to show up

(it says "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access this item.)

I am sure this is something simple, but I have searched all over in security and installation stuff, and really not having any luck at all, also my legal copy of office 07 is throwing a 1406 code as well and I can't get that resolved. Any help would be great, thanks from a new user

Have you tried right-clicking on the main setup or installation files and selecting Run as administrator? Note that you will need to provide administrative credentials to continue.

I don't seem to have that option when i get to the setup portion. sorry this may be something simple but it is not working on any programs, zipped or not. no adobe, google chrome, nothing

just tried adobe again and still says the same error code,

anyone else have some ideas? i wouldn't be up at 4 in the morning but I kinda need access to my microsoft office and these other things, any ideas on the error code with the office softwarE? I have a valid key and typed it correctly

Have you tired to unzipping it.

I'm thinking that it may be a file within an archive (zip), you will need to extract the files to a folder (normally in 'Downloads') in order to successfully run any file.

extracting the files into another folder did work, however this does not solve my problems with adobe, google chrome, and my microsoft office problems, any advice on those?

Can we assume that the program installers you are using are on original media or are they archived on a hard disk. If it's the latter and this drive was used under XP or Vista, you will need to take control of the drive and give at least the system administrators full control

This computer was a vista computer, so i would assume the latter, and how would I access full control?

There is a addon reg entry to give you Admin access "Takeownership" via right click mouse.
that is the easyiest way I know.

You have to disable UAC before you install.

Where did you download your windows 7? If its off a torrent, then its probably a fake version. If its from MSDN, then its Okay. RC from Microsoft is also okay, but seems to me like you got the final version. No watermark.

There has to be more than your telling. Simply put.
1. Is this a CLEAN install?
2. Are you Dual Booting?
3. I do understand you say 7600 RTM.
4. Where did you download from. Technet or MSDN or ?
5. Is the install from DVD or HDD.
6. If DVD what speed did you burn at?
What I'm asking is Give us all the FACTS. so we can give your proper responces.
7. Did you try the Reg entry to Add Take Ownership via Right click?
8. Did you turnoff UAC?
I could go on and on but - sorry we need more and better answers.

This is what MS has to say about your ERROR CODE 1406;

This issue may occur if one of the following scenarios is true:

• The user who is installing the program, or the user who is opening the program or file does not have sufficient permissions to modify sections of the registry that is required to perform the action. The permission for the Everyone group of the registry subkey noted in the error message is not set to Full Control.
• There is a third-party application on the system that is denying the required access to the registry subkey. In most cases, this behavior is caused by WebRoot Spy Sweeper.
• The non-administrative user accounts on the computer do not have permission to modify specific files that are used by the Office 2003 Setup program or the Office XP Setup program. These files are used by the Office 2003 Setup program or the Office XP Setup program to register different accounts for access to the Office programs. This issue may occur if a Group Policy high-security template was applied to the computer and if the high-security template restricts access to the following file:
  • Office 2003 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\Opa11.dat
  • Office XP C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\Data.dat
  If the non-administrative user accounts cannot modify this file, users cannot start any Office 2003 programs or Office XP programs on the computer. The Opa11.dat file and the Data.dat file are hardware specific. Additionally, these files are compiled during installation of Office.

Simply put you are not ADMIN or have ADMIN Privileges. or

Microsoft program has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application.

yes I did have a good copy through my university of the software, after reinstalling seven there seems to be none of the problems that there was before,no idea why but i am not complaining, thanks for the help everyone

well i thought that all was well but now when i go to add flashplayers or other programs i am getting that same error saying i may not have proper permission to access certain files, i try to run everything as administrator and still have no luck with that. any ideas?

1st, download or move whatever program you want to install to your desktop and install from there, because you may not have access rights to the folder you are trying to install from. With the shadow folders that Vista and 7 have I can't tell what folders I actually have access to, but I know I have access to the desktop. Also hit the windows key and type netplwiz and be sure your user is an administrator.

where is this "windows key" that your talking about, somthing in the properties portion or what?

I am the only user/administrator on this computer, still having problems downloading anything from the desktop. I can't believe nobody else is running into these issues. seems to be simple but I can't find a solution

could you tell us more about your hardware (fill in your system specs--lower left corner) and your problem. Are you trying to download from the desktop?
