Hey guys, I've got an old laptop here that I'm fixing for a friend. It's a decent little system and still works ok.

It's a Lenovo C200 Laptop currently running Windows XP.
It's got a Intel Celeron M 420 (1.6 Ghz CPU) with 512mb of ram, and a 40GB HD. It's also got what I think is the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics.

I'm debating weather I should just wipe it and reinstall Windows XP with SP3 and give it back, or if I should upgrade to 7.

Thoughts?

Unless your planning on adding memory and hunting up a better CPU I suggest skipping Win7 & XP and install
Windows 2000.

That thing is WAAAAAYYYYYYY to old to run for much longer.

40gigs? I cant find those anywhere else but ebay!

Don't waste your time.

lol.. 2k huh. ya right. It's got a Built for windows XP and uh oh.... really. "vista Capable" sticker on it. that must count for something right. haha!

I know it's old. I've done many laptops in the last few months and this is the oldest one. it runs XP perfectly fine. and I'm pretty sure many people have put 7 on weak systems. I was just hoping to hear if others have done anything around this level of system performance. at least the GMA 950 can handle Aero, the last laptop I did only had the 915 chipset and doesn't work with Aero, and it runs 7 perfectly fine sir!

Thanks for your help. but I'm not looking for Win2k suggestions.. sorry. Thats not helping me any. I've ran 7 on similar systems sir. I'm not retarded. I know it's old

I'm just looking to see what others here think, and what others have installed 7 to. cuz I know many have put them on some netbooks with ease. You can't tell me that the Celeron m 420 1.6 Ghz is much slower than the 1.6 Ghz Atoms.. cuz it's not. and they handle 7 pretty well. mine does at least.. thanks anyways though.

lol at windows 2000

it will run windows 7, although its probably gonna be sluggish. 512 ram is fine for windows 7(i have a pc with 512 that i put 7 on and it runs just fine) but the processor is gonna bog u down. best to just put xp back on there. and then when u give the laptop back to your friend u can tell him its time for a laptop upgrade;)

iv seen people who have run Win 7 on 512MB ram, but 1GB is the official minimum, honestly though, 2GB would be better, that seems to be the "just enough to run without wanting to rip my face off" point

I sugest $100.00 to upgrade will make it work .."Kinda OK ..."

$40.00 ...1 stick of 1GB Ram
$60.00 ... new 250GB.7200 or 5400 rpm HDD ..:D

I did this for one very old laptop ...with
Intel Celeron 1.4Ghz .."single core" ..Intel 945 Graphic chip set ..
-1.25 GB ram(Just added) and 80GB Hdd .

As I posted in another thread ...:
Do not expect it to run windows Aero ...of any kind "Glass or no glass"
(Then again who needs wds aero..." Maybe i do ...It looks nice ..:D

Actually theres really nothing wrong with Win2k.
Its XP without all the glitz and would really run great on the OPs system.
But everyone wants the latest and the greatest. I'm no better.
As soon as my Server 2008 r2 disk arrives I will be leaving Win7.
So will my laptop.

I did not read the entire thread, but that system will be ok running 7 with no less than 1G of ram, 2 if it supports it. But I might agree with Aero not working too great,, maybe. The system might be sluggish, but workable.

Install XP otherwise, it will work fine on it also.

yea well Like i said. I run windows 7 on my netbook with a 1.6 Ghz Atom, so a 1.6 Ghz Celeron M can't be "that" bad.. but yea the 512mb of ram was the other main concern.. and I've read that 945, or Intel GMA 950 actuall can and will run Aero, it's the 915 that doesn't cuz the WDDM drivers.

but ya. I just went with XP again and it works fine and runs plenty smooth.

Actually theres really nothing wrong with Win2k.
Except for the fact that it's no longer maintained with security updates and such.

Your box will run Windows 7 more than likely...run the upgrade advisor against it to be sure. Except minimal results with minimal specs. And I'd try to bump up the RAM if at all possible...that would really help out.
