Antivirus not working properly after removing Norton 360

Hi guys,

Norton 360 subscription expired recently in my uncle's laptop running W7 Home Premium x64. I suggested him free antivirus solutions as Norton was slowing his PC down and moreover there isn't anything important enough on it to warrant paying for an antivirus software.

Anyway, I wanted to install avast. So, I uninstalled Norton from Control Panel, Add or remove programs. After that I ran the Norton removal tool downloaded from their website. After everything finished, I installed avast using the default online installer. It almost installed completely, but was stuck at "Starting awsvc" or something like that for a long time. So I force closed it. Rebooted and reinstalled avast.

Installation completed successfully. But the UI did not startup. Upon checking got to know that the service required wasn't running. I tried running it manually. But I got the "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" error. I removed avast, ran the cleaner tool as suggested and reinstalled it using the offline installer. Same result.

So I removed avast and tried AVG. AVG threw up an error after the installation almost reached completion. Error code was 0x0076043. Got the same result twice.

I tried system restore. But it was too late. All the old restore points were wiped out by then and only the recent ones created during the multiple attempts of installs and uninstalls of AVs were present.

I tried Comodo. Installation completed successfully. But it also failed to open the UI like avast. Here also the service wasn't running. Attempt to manually start the service resulted in the same 1053 error.

I'm stuck here. Please help. TIA.

I ran SFC, I got "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

I installed Malwarebytes. But it's not opening at all! I tried running normally, tried as administrator, restarted and tried the same after restarting. It does not even appear in the list of processes. The only thing that I get is a UAC prompt when tried with Run as admin.

OK. The laptop came with W7 HP x64 pre installed. I need to download an ISO. In the link provided in the guide, Windows 7 Direct Download Links, Official Disk Images from Digital River

there are a lot of ISOs for HP x64. Which one should I download. The laptop has SP1 with all the latest updates installed. I have a slow internet connection with limited bandwidth cap. So I need to make sure I download the correct one.
