I use CCleaner, BUT I check each entry it wants to remove and if in question I don't remove it. If your are not sure then just leave the registry alone.

In short, No. Stay far away from them.

But, I do agree with Phone Man.
I'll use Ccleaners on occasion, and manually check what I know for a fact is bad.
If you go this route, never delete anything if you do not know what its for, or unsure.
It's also the only method I would consider safe to use.

I like CCleaner, but you should go over the settings carefully before using it. If you value cookies, Most Recent Used, etc., make sure you turn those functions off before running the program. I've NEVER had a problem with the software and update it often.

+1 on CCleaner, but it's not fool proof. It's good to also back up with ERUNT and a restore point in case you have to back off the changes(along with the built in CCleaner backup.) That gives you 3 shots to fix it if it goes sour. Plus a recent image of your system is always good.

+1. If you want a bit of a smoother boot use NTREGOPT. It doesn't delete anything. Just copies the registry hives to new files and deletes the old on boot. Even then a restore point made just before use is a good idea.

Hello MaxPayne,

I just come across this thread and I ever messed up by registry cleaner. Maybe you might like to try freeware like Iobit unistaller instead of using add/remove program in control panel. The freeware provide powerful scan option to delete file and registry.

Iobit unistaller-powerfull scan.png Iobit unistaller-remove registry.png

Usually , it rarely needs to reboot after uninstallation yet for some software , reboot might be required.

This might not help on uninstalled program as your preference yet you might consider using it for the next uninstallation.

For the software that has been uninstalled , if you provide the name of application, there might be somebody help you out. Also, some software vender may provide specific tool or method for such software uninstallation.

just one another opinion. :)

Over at the Piriform forums there are many threads / posts regarding there being an issue with CCleaner's reg cleaner. Most, if not all of the mods are recommending unchecking the "file associations" tab in the cleaner, as there seems to be a bug that is causing some bad things to happen............ Man, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it, or you will end up having to fix it.

Yes i found WinZip registry optimizer good

These days’ people are buying registry cleaner and registry boosters or optimizers, simply because they prevent system crashes and optimize the Windows registry and enhance the PC performance.
If your PC is showing symptoms like slow performance, a long starting time, it is freezing frequently or it is crashing without any apparent reason. Then it may be having some issues with the Windows registry.
As for Window registry, it is a place on the hard drive where Windows keeps the record of information it might need in the future like the changes made to system settings, applications opened etc. It is the place where you'll find things like user profiles, information regarding the file types, hardware and software installed or deleted.

So now you may have a query as to why to have a registry cleaner, the answer is with use this windows registry gradually becomes out-of-date and gets loaded with obsolete information. This may happen because of many reasons like when an application is removed just by deleting the folder, changing drive letters or simply moving the file without updating its record in the registry.

Whatever may be the situation these incorrect records accumulate inside the registry and they corrupt it. As a result computer slows down, shows errors, system alerts and even crashes. It also becomes evident that you've got problems with your registry when your computer boots slower than before.
To prevent a situation like this where the window registry does not function properly and also to optimize i tried WinZip Registry Optimizer and it really drastically improves the overall performance of my PC.

I downloaded from latest WinZip updated version at Windows Registry Cleaner & Registry Booster | WinZip® Registry Optimizer.

Hope it might help you.

be careful with that last post: the scary buzz words are 'free download' - it is not free. they charged 29.99 for it and tout it as a 69.99 value. it is also listed as a scan only version unless you pay the price to register it won't repair anything... dodgy sales practices at least.

My pleasure :)

emm.. additionally, I just use registry cleaner in case of Physical memory dump (long time ago with XP) which seems to work at the beginning and notice some tweak performance ; however after several registry cleans it eventually ended up with clean install. Hence,my preference is backing up OS partition if i would like to try some software which i would really like to use ;otherwise, use try& decide mode in acronis for temporary use as sometimes restoring from system restore point could not be completely performed.

Regarding registry, I just do normal export for registry backup after each registry modification and after using iobit uninstaller, i have never use registry cleaner again until now.

For window 7 performance I follow this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html then let window 7 update do the job and never use tweak tool again (nonetheless, the performance is depends on individuals)

For tweak tool, (just for XP in my case), the favourite tool i tried is system mechanic but i don't use registry cleaning feature (I just try the trial yet full version features are supported on trial period)

And I always keep in mind as many seven forum gurus suggest that don't bother with registry if you don't know what it is for or unsure about.
'
This might a little bit off topic as i found your similar thread, therefore would just
like to share an opinion. :)

Best,

Why do you want to clean your registry? Is it dirty? How would you know?

Q: When it comes to the registry ... what exactly what is "dirt".
A: There's none! The best registry cleaner to use is none at all. There's just no need.

Yeah, I just had to use ERDNT to fix up registry after being hosed by CC. It worked so well in the past I didn't make the backup file(well, I had the ERUNT save to rely on.)

Must be something introduced lately.
