Ok, I got a cable/dsl router with 4-port switch (etherfast by linksys) given to me. Me being me, I have a hunger for knowledge. `Well, my question is, is there anyway to configure it to hide or mask my ip address and anything related to it, or make my system more secure, or, idk... I just don't want to let it go to waist. Any suggestions??

Its mere use will by nature make you more secure. Dependant on the model you have NAT (network address translation), SPI (stateful packet inspection), MAC addy spoof protection etc. It auto creates internal IP's (usually 192.168.1.x) and keeps them separate from the external one the Internet sees.

If you dont have the knowledge dont mess with it, just use it

It's a different gateway from my wireless gateway though... And the reason why I want to mess with it is so I can learn about it. And it's just laying around. Thanks for the help though.

I would go to the LinkSys site and download the users manual for it and read through it to see what it's capabilities are. If it's just a switch then it doesn't do much for you except provide additional Ethernet ports.

Google can give you some real help here as well. difference router switch
