Any way to detect Java apps/dependencies?

Howdy,

Before I remove Java completely for security reasons, I would like to find out if anything needs it. Is there a way to detect Java applications/dependencies besides removing Java completely? Removing it isn't practical because I am unable (unwilling) to test every application on multiple machines.

- Windows 7 Pro

Thanks for any advice that you might offer.

I actually want to uninstall Java completely, not just disable it in the browser, but I would like to make sure that it isn't needed. Thanks for your input.

What applications are you looking to run?
I don't want to run any Java applications if it can be avoided. The problem is that there might be Java apps installed that I am unaware of and I don't want to screw other users by uninstalling it.

Could you provide a screenshot of the installed programs?

Nope, no screen shots since there are several computers. I guess I'll just uninstall Java and see if anyone complains but I hate doing it that way. I was hoping that there would be a way to search for Java apps so I could try to avoid disrupting the workflow of the users.

Yeah I guess so, and then install Java for those users specifically, not many applications and webpages require Java anyway.

Sorry I could not provide any help,

If I remember correctly their are several Office programs that use Java. Just test on one computer. Remove Java and see if everything works as you want it to. If they don't; install Java back on the computer. I understand your security concern with Java. I have no Java on my computer at this time but the programs I use are most likely not the same programs you use.

I'll just take the plunge and remove Java and wait for the fallout. I'd rather get chewed out for doing that instead of for being lax on security.
