Any way to get a HD to be seen as two partitions instead of one?

Hi - sorry if this in the wrong forum - mods feel free to move if nec.

Here's the story: I have two physical HDs in one of my machines. The first is C. The second physical HD has two partitions, which are D and E. This drive has failed, and I took a HD from another machine, and added it to this one we are talking about. W7 sees this HD as D, because unlike the one that failed, this "new" one was originally formatted with only one partition. I would like to get W7 to see this HD as D and E (and transfer files as necessary), so when I load my music template from my sequencer, it will find all of the necessary audio files. If the second HD is only D, the template is not going to be able to find all of the files automatically, even if they are physically on the D drive - this is b/c the sequencer is looking for some of the files on E, which doesn't exist. I can browse for, and point to the the files on D, but it gets to be a PITA if I have to open eny old templates or projects.

So, what I would like to do is somehow get Windows to see that second HD as D and E, instead of just D. Is there any trick that I can do to make this happen? Trying to avoid having to reformat. Any ideas will be welcome....thanks!

Sure you can. You could shrink D by how much you want E to be. This will create unallocated space to the right of D. From here, you would just create a new partition with the drive letter E from the unallocated space.



In the future, you might consider this below to be able to access all of your say audio files from your Music library instead. Having your sequencer look in the library will have all the different audio files available even though they are actually still located where you saved them (ex: E)

• Create a new folder at any location you want.
• Move any files you want into the new folder.
• Include the new folder into a library of your choice.
• If you like, you can also set the new folder to be the default "save" to location for the library as well.

well without third party software you could do this, start > right click on computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management > Locate your hard drive that is formatted as with the D: partition > Right click and select shrink Volume > and shrink it to the desired size you would like it to be (Microsoft may only allow you to shrink it so far)

Make sure your CD/DVD drive hasnt been reassigned E: if it is, right click on it and select "change drive letter or path" to F: or something (doesn't matter as long as its a letter after E: in your case)

Then right click on the empty space and create a new simple volume and follow the steps. When you get to the part when it asks you to assign a drive letter, make sure E: is selected. then continue until your finished. Hope this was what your looking for
