Any way to speed up the download and installation of monthly patches?

With the next patch update looming in 10 days, I wanted to know if it took anyone else's system 40 minutes to an hour just to download and install 2 to 4 patches? Even creating the restore point takes a while.

My system has Windows 7 -64 bit with SP-1 as the OS, 1.86 GHz CPU, and 3 GB RAM.

I'm not very tech savvy and not comfortable doing many software manipulations. I was hoping for an easy fix. I just don't want anyone to waste their time posting a lot of complicated procedures I won't understand or know how to do. If there isn't, I can live with it. Thanks.

Not much you can do with your system specs other then a faster ISP may help. Or a SSD drive may help.

The main problem is that the Windows Update client is fundamentally broken. It takes FAR more time than what's really necesary to do all its stuff.

The simplest alternative I can think of is to use the website to download the patches manually and then apply them yourself. You'll need to know the KB numbers to search for them (SevenForums publishes those for example). That'll just use the minimum time I can think, at the price of missing some updates.

The other option is to just assume defeat and let it take whatever it likes, just do it at night or when you aren't using the computer. Clicking "search for updates" just before going to bed and let it take hours it a good option.

Or just live without the updates. There isn't anything specially useful in them (and quite a few are actually harmful). Unless you know you require something in particular, skipping them isn't a bad choice.

Wasn't too bad today. Only about an hour of agonizing over what and if will happen during and after downloads. For the last several months the 2 entries for the .NET Optimization show up in the Task Manager for a few days after the patch updates..

That is what I do.

I download the .msu file and install them manually.
It does appear to be quicker on installation, well it does in my case!
