There's probably 50 or 60 USB audio interfaces on the market... anywhere from $40 to $4,000.

Even with a modest interface and a good mic you can record with very decent quality.

Run a Google search on USB Audio Interface

Do your homework.... look at the reviews, ask more questions, educate yourself before purchasing.

Something like this may be perfectly acceptable, plus it comes with Cubase LE recording software.

Buy Lexicon Alpha USB Desktop Recording Studio | Audio Interfaces | Musician's Friend

(the above is a link to information only)

Of course... you can always spend more.

Sound Recorder still works in Windows 7. You just need to make sure that "Stereo Mix" is on and turned to a decent level.

Hi all

I have a recording studio (using Sonar X1). The PC sound input requirements are near "line level" and thus a low level device such as the pickup output from a guitar or a standard P.A. type mic are inadequate for proper audio levels. The suggestion for an external USB connected interface unit are right on. There are USB connected microphones that you can use (a standard computer mic has limited frequency response and does not make a "high fidelity" recording) but the recording interface that has both XLR (for mics) and 1/4" jacks for instruments is the best option.

Recording programs are a different issue as is Latency.
