Hey,

Got a crack in my ceiling that I've got to repair, just doing a spackle/paint over, but I figured I'd ask for advice in case there's anything that a normal tutorial won't go over.

Not knowing why your ceiling cracked I'll just give you a good suggestion no matter what the reason, I would definately use some of this fiberglass mesh tape to keep it from re-cracking as soon as the spackle dries.

This is a good suggestion, as that most cracks are caused by settling, and settling is usually progressive, thus causing cracks to reopen or widen.

A couple of questions:
What part of the house is the crack in? Is there more than one crack in the house? How old is the house? How long has the crack been there that you've notice it and has it gotten bigger and wider since the first time you noticed it? Take a look at the outside walls from about the same area that the crack is in, do you see any cracks in the walls if brick or block and is there any cracks in the foundation. If you answer yes to any of this questions; you need to get a contractor out there asap as there is an underlying issue causing the cracks and needs immediate repair work. If answering no to all, then most likely it's just some small settling happening, that has been happening since the day is was built and this is normal.

Repairing: depending on the size, shape and length of crack will determine you plan of action. On a small crack some fiberglass tape and joint compound will do just fine making sure that you feather out each layer of joint compound. It typically is feathered 10 to 12 inches on each side of crack to make it esthetically pleasing to the eye. If a large crack (with out pictures) will involve cutting the damaged area out and replacing with a patch (a piece of sheet rock) and then tape and mud.

Sorry I'm late. Never thought I'd see a drywall thread here. If you haven't already painted I suggest you just rub some painters caulk into the crack and paint it. No this is not a pro fix! But will work just fine for a home owner fix. This will keep your repair small and less noticeable not to mention keeping wives happier. If you get enough cracks in a few years hire someone to do it right. Feel free to PM with questions I'm glad to help.

Yeah I'm all set. I sanded down the crack, threw some fast dry putty on and bought about 5 different kinds of "custom matched paint" to use until I realized that it was probably the cheapest stuff in the store, went and bought that, mixed it and it matched closer than anything else I'd seen

Haha, the Mythbusters actually did an episode where they showed what would happen if you stuck a stick of dynamite in a paint can, good stuff.

i wouldn't recommend using caulk if you are going to paint over it with emulsion paint as it has a tendency to dry with a sheen( the crack ) also it shrinks leaving an uneven finish. if it is a hairline crack " rake " it out with a scraper then fill it you wont need joint tape for hairline cracks , be sure to sand the filler well back and prime the filler before coating the whole ceiling ,wall etc

Yeah I already did it. I ended up having to go over with putty twice to get it smooth and whatnot and then I went over it once with plain white primer and then once with a paint that is a bit darker than the rest of the wall, just with a thin coat so it matches. I also had to sand the living crap out of the primer so that the texture would match.
