Anyone else finding Google Chrome has a pretty lousy spell check?

every so often, when I mistype a word (such as capitilzation ), it will not have any guesses as to what is the correct spelling for that word, even though the search automatically knows!

Even worse, it will mark common words (such as movie) as misspelled! WTBH?

Nope, I use Chrome's spellchecker, and it works fine, maybe try reinstalling Chrome to reset the dictionary file? Note that reinstalling will most likely erase your data, unless you use Chrome sync, which will store your Chrome data in the cloud.

I just completed a full reinstall of my OS, and didn't save chrome's app data. it's still there.

Tried this one Future? it should work mine works with everything even emails and Word doc etc

Once I can give up Chrome's bookmark sync I'll look into that.

I'm kinda dissapointed Microsoft doesn't have a system-wide spell check yet. That was one of the few thins I missed about my Mac.

Also, chrome doesn't seem to like "dissapointed." Anyone confirm this?

Did you try speckie mate I think it is an across the board app at least it is in my experience even booting to Win 8 and or Ubuntu.

Hum thats bad luck mate anyway maybe you could use it for email at least unless it is tied in with your Chrome.

I've found any spell checker might not offer the correct spelling for all words. Different checkers vary a bit as regards the words they do or don't. At least they all highlight a misspelt word so that you take a look at it. Then maybe alter it a little manually so that the checker has another attempt. This most often makes it offer the correct spelling.

Firefox's spell checker and Speckie (IE) offered correct spellings for 'capitilzation'. When an 'i' is added to the word (capitilization), Chrome's spell checker offers 'capitalization' but not 'capitalisation'. The other checkers did so (all with English UK dictionaries) but I still find Chrome's checker is OK enough to work with generally.

Firefox wasn't happy with 'movie'. Speckie (IE) highlighted it as a misspelling too. That might be dictionary specific though. Words can always be added to the dictionaries if needed.

I just mostly think it's odd that Chrome doesn't tie into google search spelling suggestions. That would've been awesome.

Use Mozilla Firefox, it has bookmark sync, you can import your Chrome bookmarks, and it has a good spell check.

IE10 in Win8 has a spell checker...

But in reality I don't think any compare to my old BB's learning spell check.

Heh, I have not found a spell checker that isn't a complete load of crap IMHO. Not on Linux or windows. It's a bit of a tough job and so completely unglamorous that no one cares to put much into it.

I have problems with a lazy shift pinkie and frequently spell words like "THere" which most spell checks completely choke on. I will also frequently hit the semicolon instead of the apostrophe like so "isn;t" and virtually spell checker can catch that either (Just like now on FF on Ubuntu).

The reasons for those types of errors are (or should be) quite well known, but no... And then of course if there are TWO letters misspelled, your usually completely out of luck even though when looking at it the answer (or set of possible answers) is incredibly obvious.

Worse even if you cross language "flavors", I.e. use both UK and American words in a single document I.e. right now FF is telling me I spelled "flavor" wrong even though my install was set to US English

Agreed. Spellcheckers can be a bit too inflexible at times, insisting that a certain word is not spelt the way you entered it (which you KNOW is the right way). I shudder to think what would happen if Google, Yahoo, Bing, or whatever were to dynamically check your spelling as you type it and interject so-called corrections and suggestions without any say so on your behalf. For example:

"Look over thare [Google has noticed that you mispelt that word. Did you mean there, their, or they're?]"

Could be very tedious if they go down that path.
