Anyone else try over clocking in windows 7?

I have a intel quad core Q9400 and ultimate 7 64bit. Tried over clocking the cpu a little bit via an bios option and ended up with a blue screen once every couple of hours or so.

Turned the over clock option off in the bios and now Windows 7 is rock solid again, anyone else experience anything like this?

3.3V was bout the same, 12V was about the same but 5V had been cranked up to about 5.6V

Hey TCMAN and welcome

As one of the ppl who look a BSOD dmp files dozens of times a day I would say your experience isnt unusual. I ALWAYS say if you are getting BSOD and overclocking stop. Especially in 64bit.

Those last figures relate to the PSU voltage output and not any overclocking settings per se.

Random Blue Screens from unstable overclocks are very common (I should know - I had/have more than my fair share of them )

All I can suggest at this stage is before overclocking, read as much as possible about your particular board and CPU settings and then take it slow.

As a very general rule, the majority of OC problems stem from either insufficient CPU voltage (vcore), RAM settings or can be heat related.

thanks guys, I have never been a over clocker before but i figured, new os, new hardware, new software might as well try overclock, didnt seem to work out so no big deal.

I think my hardware is fast enough anyway.

If you only realized how much faster you can make it with a stable overclock. Zero problems here with my 64 bit overclock. This machine is smoking fast, never any bsod's or any other problem for that matter. You do need a good heatsink, lots of fans and a bit of skill.

It's mostly about making the right voltage adjustments in bios and using the correct divider for the memory. Lots of stablity testing, patience and lots of time. Took me 6 full days 24/7 to get this one right.

Until, like you said, stability testing, patience and skill are factored in.

IntelBurnTest is a great program to test stability and can tell you whether your machine is stable in minutes.. As opposed to hours like some other programs.

I have 1 of my pc's oc'd and the ati drivers sometimes crash at startup. Happens about 1/5 of the time. Strange ting is the vid card isn't oc'd. (radeon 4850 on win7 x64)

If your going to overclock I think you have to plan on some instability.

Attempting is one thing, doing is another. It's a done deal for me, in fact I wrote the book on it.

Intel burn will only get you so far. I've seen countless burn test victims trying to figure out why their system is still crashing after 20 passes of burn test.

Prime blend is superior IMO.

If your going to overclock I think you have to plan on some instability.

You aren't done overclocking until your system is completely 100 percent stable.

If you are getting crashes there IS a reason for it.

I have zero stablity problems even up to 4275MHz it will not crash even when running Vantage all day long. My E8600 could run at 4.5GHz on air with zero crashes ever.

Disagreeing with the facts doesn't make much sense to me. And thats to each his own LOL.

I've seen guys spend weeks with burn test only to realize they were wasting their time. Two days with Prime Blend and it's done, so which one seems faster now? I know what I know ain't nobody telling me different.
