anyone tried KOTOR?

I am in the process of trying to find my "Play Disc" (Sunday Night). When I do I'm going to try both KOTOR 1 and 2. I thought I tried it and they worked, but I'll let you know.

Ive installed KOTOR 1 and have so far not gotten it to work, I installed the patch that was released after it and to no effect. I ran it in compatibility mode for XP SP 2, and as an administrator, I run the game and it goes to the black loading screen and it immediately crashes and stops working. If anybody gets it to work let me know!

I think it's the problem with nvidia drivers. I have installed Vista64 driver and KotOR 1 worked perfectly, but KotOR2 didn't work at all and Jedi Academy worked very badly... After installation of Windows7 driver from Windows Update KotOR1 stopped working at all, KotOR2 crashed, but Jedi Academy started to work.
I'm still looking for the solution...

KotOR and Win7

Hello again,
so far so good. I managed to run both KotOR and KotOR II on Windows 7. KotOR II, however, required to be launched in WinXP comatibility mode, but they are running both. I installed older nvidia drivers (Vista 64), and subsequently downloaded the new ones from Windows Update. There still many "why?" about this system, but after this KotOR runs. KotOR2 is a little bit unstable (hangs on "OBSIDIAN" display, but at least doesn't crash). Jedi Academy runs also, but I cannot get it to work properly in fullscreen mode. I have also tried SW "Republic commando" - works OK.

I've been able to run KOTOR 2 without any problems, or using compatability.

What graphic card do you have? I have nvidia 9800GT. I tried to install KotOR2 on Win 7 64 and 32 bit and without compatibility mode it crashed right after starting (showed the message "program stopped working")... It might be nvidia drivers aft all...

I just tried running it again with no luck, it still crashes right after start up. Even running in compat mode for XP S2 or Vista, and running as admin. Im running Win 7 32 Bit, with an NVidia card.

It certanly is the graphic card dirver. Try to download the newest Nvidia drivers from Windows update and run it again. KotOR2 will require compat mode with XP sp2, but KotOR1 will go as it is. They will both work a little bit unstable on first screen (Bioware for KotOR1 and Obsidian for KotOR2), but once you've gone thru - they work. Btw, Nvidia guys should work a little bit more on their drivers yet...

After reading your post I looked into optional updates from the start menu and there were some updates regarding updating Nvidia drivers, I ran the update and everythings working fine =). So good stuff guys, good stuff

I can see this problem is clearly solvable, but I'm still having trouble. The game runs for 5 minutes. Starting from a brand knew game, I can get to the bridge, and then the game will crash. It's also not specifically that spot, but wherever I am at the end of that 5 minutes. Further, after certain cut scenes or combat, I lose the ability to control the movement of the main character, as in they don't move at all, and am forced to move the other party member. This isn't as bad as crashing, and control returns eventually. Another thing I have noticed is that my framerate is off the charts, running at upwards of 700 fps. Smooth as anything, but a little concerning.

Currently running the latest drivers for windows 7 for EVGA GeForce 9800 gtx+, searched for all updates and installed everything from them, but there was no nVidia anything in my optional updates. I attempted to run it in XP compatable mode, uninstalled and reinstalled, ran updated and not updated.

Any help would be appreciated.

for me I have tested KOTOR I and KOTOR II on Windows 7 7077 and 7100, with no success.

Kotor doesn't run at all

Kotor II runs fine, unless you want to change the graphics settings. Changing any setting in ADVANCED SETTINGS is impossible due to a crash before hand.

Someone try to turn on Anti-Aliasing and tell me if its possible.

I have a Radeon 1900xt ... Windows 7 will not let me install Catalyst 9.3 and I cannot find Catalyst 9.1

ANy ideas?

Interesting, I installed Catalyst 9.3 on my laptop, now KOTOR 2 works just fine. Now if I could just get Catalyst to work on my damn desktop!

Apparently there is something wrong with the Catalyst 9.3 drivers and they don't support the x1900. I found the 9.1 Drivers and they work fine.

I installed KOTOR and I can change graphics settings. One problem, if i turn on antialiasing or anistropy the game plays windowed. I found a fix to work\ around this by turning them off each time you exit the game, however, if I do not play windowed my screen flashes like hell....

*SOLUTION*

Download and install catalyst 8.2 drivers, they are from january 2008... but they work with no issues.

I have a feeling that a solution like this will work for most older graphics cards. Most of the time, updates in newer drivers stop adding improvements to older cards anyhow.

Oddly enough applying a no CD fix to the KOTOR will get it to run under Windows 7. My brother had to use this trick to get KOTOR to run under Vista. It seems to work under Windows 7, and it doesn't require you to downgrade your graphics drivers.

You'll need to update KOTOR to v.1.03 (the latest version) first. After that just browse to the directory KOTOR is installed in and replace swkotor.exe with the one in the attached zip file. You should be able to run the game after that.

Just a few notes, though. This will get KOTOR to run, but it will be a bit unstable. Switch swkotor.exe and launcher.exe to XP compatability mode for a bit more stability and save often, the game will still crash every once in while even under compatability mode. Don't bother with any of the earlier compatability modes. I tried these and the game kept hanging on the load screen right after charcter creation.

If you find a spot in the game where the game keeps hanging/crashing, try changing the processor affinity for swkotor.exe under task manager. You don't have to do this every time you run KOTOR, just if you find a rough spot that keeps on crashing.

If the game runs in a window rather than full screen you can fix this by changing the resolution in Options>Graphics. On my PC KOTOR's option menu gives me three identical choices for each available resolution, I just picked the last one for the resolution I wanted (1280x1024) and game has been running full screen ever since.

One last note. On character creation I found that the game crashes if you try to cycle through the character portraits too quickly. So slow your roll if you don't want the game to crash before you even start playing it :p.

this may not be a fix for everyone. I have to use a no cd crack, as I have lost my cds. The game did not work with a no cd crack before I changed my drivers.

Also, it may be well to note that it could be easier to use an old set of drivers that fixes your problems with ALL (or most) games, then to try to use an independent fix for each game. It is not necessarily a downgrade to get older drivers, as long as you are applying them to old hardware. This especially goes for graphics driver that support many cards, as they generally stop changing things for old cards at a certain point in time.

Oh, and if a new driver results in compatibility issues, is it progress?

Drivers seem to be the biggest problem in windows 7. I leave my laptop on at night, and every morning I noticed that the wireless lan stopped working. I would have to reset it to get it to work again.... I downloaded drivers from the manufacturer (not intended for Windows 7) and replaced the microsoft ones... works great.

So I'm also having issues getting Kotor to run in windows 7...

Originally when I installed the game, the hardware scan told me my OS was incompatible, and my video card drivers were out of date. I managed to fix the OS issue by running in XP service pack 3 compatibility mode, but can't get drivers to work.

I'm running a geforce 8600 gt on the latest nvidia drivers (185.15). When I start the game, I hit play and then it either stops loading and the normal screen (the one with the ebon hawk) disappears, or a box with a bunch of gibberish, and I literally mean gibberish, pops up.

If anyone's got kotor working on an 8000 series gpu I'd love to hear what drivers worked! Or any other suggestions would be welcome!

Pretty much the same issue as above. Using an 8600 videocard, but the drivers are very out of date (the PC running win7 is not hooked up to the internet). Right now i'm downloading the latest patch for KOTOR and the most recent drivers for the videocard. I'll post an update/edit this post when the results are clear.

EDIT: Alright, did all of that. It appears to be working. This is what I did.

- Installed latest videocard drivers (nVidia geForce 8600)
- Installed latest patch for KOTOR

All seems to be working fine. If there are any negative developments I'll be sure to post them here.

Hope that helps out anyone who's having the same trouble as I was.

EDIT 2: nvm. It crashes when I reach the bridge. I'll try tweaking the settings a little.

has anyone had any other issues with kotor 2? i want to play it again. it seems to run just fine on windows 7 without any compatibility mode selected. the only problem is that it seems the game doesn't support wide screen. i'm running it at the highest resoluion supported on my laptop which is 1280 x 768 and the image won't strech all the way to fill my screen. i had no problem with this in vista but i have no idea why it's doing it. i tried to run it as xp sp3 and vista sp2 but still the same thing
