I thought something was a little off with my performance and decided to just disable and re enable some things on my SSD.

After re enabling the search indexing feature, performance was noticeably better and to my surprise the SSD benchmarks improved as well .

Just was curious about this but thought i should share.

I also did that a long time ago.

Edit: I guess I misread - I thought you disabled the indexing feature - that's what I did.

I use Everything Everything Search Engine

It finds anything on my comp in seconds, and I have 5 hdds.

First time i have ever heard of it to be honest.

If you don't like it ( but I think you will), you can just uninstall it.

I really don't understand it to be honest and i'm very happy with my current browser , don't really know the differences between a search engine and say Google.

Thought they were the same

Ahh, now i get it lol, yeah thats not an issue with me , i have always kept my computer with literally nothing on it except what windows comes with.

I really don't download and save anything to my computer , i never have . I was solely interested in a little quicker access times when browsing the net and re enabling windows search indexing seemed to do that , don't have any clue why but it has .

Computer is definitely faster with browsing the net now , not a night and day difference but noticeable nonetheless.

When i said i was just disabling and re enabling things to test if they made a difference in this area windows search was one of them (not because i was searching for anything though) just because i happened upon it.

My parents can never find anything on their computer ( and they keep lots of stuff ) so they might definitely need "Everything".

It's superb.

But it searches ONLY by file name. Not file content.

If you have 100,000 files and one of them is named "spaghetti sauce", it will find it in a second or two as soon as you enter portions of that file name into the search term box.

If, on the other hand, your parents put their spaghetti sauce recipes in a file called "nice stuff", they aren't going to find the recipes if they don't remember "nice stuff".

I think the Windows built-in search tool searches by content, which is why it's slow, but still useful if you are disorganized.

Great , thank you , sounds very worthwhile.
Your post asked about Windows search indexing which is a local files-only search mechanism, not a web search engine like Google.

So to address your questions about Everything, it's a conceptual replacement for the filename search capability of Windows Search (which uses that index built by the indexing you asked about). So to answer your questions about search indexing with a suggestion to consider giving Everything a try is a legitimate answer.

Everything is terrific, and lightning fast. Doesn't need to do heavyweight indexing after initial install (and its very quick initial indexing), as it keeps up with things going on with its own realtime update (of its own index) whenever files are created, renamed or deleted from any partition on your system.

As was pointed out Everything is not a "content" search... it is strictly a full or partial "filename" search, which probably satisfies 99.99% of all your searching for things on your local drives.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Just noticed more responses in this thread, sorry for the delay in responding. Thank you dsperber , excellent explanation.

Layback Bear , how the two came up was i said what i had noticed with turning on indexing search for my computer over having it turned off on my SSD and that was about it .

It was just a comment not asking for feedback or anything but a member chimed in and talked about everything which i appreciate . I have never heard of it and did not know how it related to my observation but i am glad it was brought up as it seems very useful.

Okay I understand.
My recommendation is to leave Indexing on. I know of no good reason to turn it off using a hard drive or ssd.

Everything Search is a great little program.

The performance improvement is a normal effect. The difference in the measurements is arbitrary. Those measurement tools never produce the same results in 2 different runs.
