Solved AOMEI or other partition tool to restore MBR

I had a failed backup operation and had to shut down. My boot drive is giving the
device no longer recognized error from Win7.

Can AOMEI or other other tool restore MBR or what is needed?

I've attached the disk to another machine and see all it's content.

AOMEI showed a restore MBR in it's menu. Please give advice on that.
And show a secure place to download the AOMEI. I got into some I/OBit hell
which installed a program I don't want. Where is a clean install ?

Ok I started my own self- help on this.

I got AOMEI installed but wondered about having it put things in the start menu.

Anyway, I ran the Check Partition option in AOMEI of the problem disk. AOMEI asked to run chkdsk.
It did that and then:

Chkdsk found some errors in the partition. Would you like to fix them now?

I quit at that point though it looked like the right solution.

As to error reporting of the problem boot disk, I don't know if I can get a print screen.
It was the black and white screen showing failure to boot because the 'device could not be found.'

That's when I thought of AOMEI and fix MBR routine in it.

As a I recall there is a way to do that from the Win& repair disk at command line.

I would like to salvage the disk as it is rather than going to a backup.

But I didn't want to commit to the Fix procedure until I know it won't wipe the disk.

Thanks for replies.

It depends what errors chkdskhas found if its bad sectors and they are on the boot record it could be toast if its just file system corruption it needs fixing as that may be the problem. If the message is disk cant be found it suggests either a cable fault power fault port fault or a dead drive. If its just boot sector it should say disk boot failure doe sit show up in the bios ok?

Chdsk won't wipe the disk. It might find some bad sectors and mark them , so it is possible that may affect some data - but if it on bad sectors, you can't use that data anyway.

Try check disk first and if you still have problems , then use bootable media to see if anything else needs fixing.

If you want to create bootable media:
There is an iso file here:

16299x64-v2.iso

To extract the iso to usb you could try Rufus, though this USB7ice is simpler (attached below) . Leave it set as FAT32 to support both bios and efi boot

I'll review the text of the error. It's hard to remember multiple lines verbatim.
I did all the cable checks and installed the HD ro a separate setup. Error was same.

You're not giving us all the information we need.
- On post #1 you mentioned that you were doing a backup operation and had to shut down. What kind of backup (file&folder or disk image)? What program you were using?
- In witch drive you're having a error (source or target drive).
- Is the drive internal or external?

Here is the detail of the error which is a common one.
Message top line is from "Windows Boot Manager."

"Windows failed to start.
A recent hardware or software change might be the problem.

{instructions on use of the Repair disk]

Status 0x000000e

The boot selection failed becausea required device is inaccessible.

end of message.

I have caught up on your current replies.

I'm using a good disk and am able to switch off of the error HD.
Next I will install AOMEI on the working disk. One thing I wondered is if the

AOMEI has to be installed on a like system or motherboard to work

properly as is the case is Sysprep is not run for 'discovery' of the hardware.
Please give any detail on this.

I think it's clear that this is a boot failure not hardwarefailure and I'll run the AOMEI fix and report back.

Making bootable media with Rufus. Has that ever gotten any better or easier?
I had a thumb drive set up with that at one time to run Hirens tools.

I am back.
I installed AOMEI to my working boot drive.
I ran chkdsk from the AOMEI menu which went through easily and didn't
show much in the way of errors.
I ran the AOMEI Fix option from the Inspect Partiton dialog.
It found the errors.
At asking to fix, it goes to D: but then loops out and asks again.

At this point I went to the MBR option. I ran the MBR option at right click on the D: Drive.

Then I couldn't determine if anything was done. Bottom Screen left it says:

Job Pending
1. Fix MBR (whatevs).

Well after all that, booting the problem drive after switch in BIOSto test gave the same error.

I don't know which of the operations worked or failed. What happens after a Pending job and
how do I get it to execute?

Can you give step by step instructions and say what should be happening?

In the meantime I'll see if I can find my print instructions on those command line routines for MBR
in Win7

I am getting the iso listed at 600 mb just to see what it is.

Once downloaded can it be used to load a program from the CD? I have wanted this
for a low level format program.

I am still playing around with AOMEI but will try to use the repair disk.
If that works I'll give the details from the FIXMBR routine as described in a link fron howtogeek-- a relaible source.

Worst case is I have to wipe the disk from a backup and update everything.

I don't know what you are asking.

The iso can be burned to cd, or extracted to usb stick. The idea is to then boot from the cd/usb you just created.
A small operating system ( windows pe ) loads from the booted cd/usb into Random Access memory.

You can try and run programs located on any other drive from within booted windows pe. Some will work, some won't.

Can we get back to the "job Pending" at request to refresh MBR.

Just now I can't even find that in the menu.

To review:

I have 2 desktop HDD running an old version of Norton Ghost.
The operation is going to slow-- 10 hours or something. I shut because I know that
perhaps there is a NTFS problem I missed after a disk wipe.

I shut down.

Target disk is ok but needed a format which is simply requested through Win7 administrative tools.
The boot drive does not work but is not damaged. I can see the file content when using a different
bootable HDD.

AOMEI has not solved anything. I am looking for other solutions.

If there is pending operation, click the big green APPLY tick at top left of Aomei main window. It won't do anything until you tell it to APPLY.

The message you describe seems more like a bcd problem than mbr executable code.
The boot selection failed becausea required device is inaccessible.
You could try running startup repair from booted winpe/winre.

I was ready to take my medicine for not finding the Apply button. Must have been b/c it did not light green. But the error persists at the point where I select to execute the repair at the chkdsk dialog and loops back. I will keep an eye on the apply button though.

What screen or screens reveal the Refresh MBR option: that which shows "Pending" in the corner?
I had located it at one time but a screen shot and how to get there will help.

During the time between I did get some paper copy made of the FIXMBR routine in Win 7 cmd.

It may take a while yet for me to get this sorted or give up.
