APK file extension

I wanted to take a quick look at a APK file so I just right click on it and selected open with the wrong one.
Now I cant get them back to the way they were so I can open them in APKtool.
I found this on the net and before I try this can someone let me know its safe.

regedit (Registry Editor) opens, on the left pane (side), click on (Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER first, then the list expands. You keep clicking until you get to where you need to go) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion?\Explorer\FileExts?\. Then, after expanding 'FileExts?' in the previously mentioned location, find the '.apk' extension, right click it and click delete. Restart your computer, then it should work. All I had to do was delete that from the registry and the icons switched right back to the apk icons.

Jack I don't know about doing this but would like to see the net link you got this answer from. If you do go ahead I would strongly urge you to back up the registry first.

Run regedit as admin and go to File click on it and Export it to a folder somewhere I keep mine in docs or even on the desktop (preferably one copy in two different sites). You can always revert back using this back up if it things go belly up.

If you look at the 2nd pic none of those are the default program for APK files, that's what the issue is.

apk files are Android's app packages and you need special software to work with that in Windows.

this thread on Xdadevelopers (android development forum) contains one of such tools and instructions. It basically converts the apk in something that you can open with WinRar or whatever can open .rar files anyway.

1st thanks for the friendly reply.....I will try to find where I got that regedit info. from.
Its a little important I get this right again because its for decompile/recompile apk and basic editing xml/smali files for my android phone the last thing I need is to mess up the phone.
if I cant get it back the way they were, maybe do a system restore.

In the second picture you have to go to 'Browse" and navigate to the Program Files (or Program Files x86 if the program is 32bit) on the C partition. There you have to find your program folder and the .exe within that folder. That's the one you double click.
