Apple Mail to Live Mail

Can this be done without having to export from Apple Mail to Outlook Express to Live Mail?

When I compare the contents of Apple Mail folders to Live Mail folders they appear to use a very similar file format.

Apple Mail uses .emlx and Live Mail uses .eml - when each file type is opened with a text editor they look fairly similar (in the sense that they're not just binary files).

The file naming seems a little different, and I don't understand the folder structures, but it would be great if somebody could help me move this stuff over.

I'm sick of using OSX - I've had two machines on the go for 9 months now: OSX for mail, iCal, and contacts, and Windows XP for serious stuff (the idea was to separate admin stuff from proper work - 3D in my case). Yesterday I bought some snazzy new guts for my old XP tower (an ex-Alienware) and bought W7 x64 along with it.

Love it!

I just want it all on one box now - please can someone help me make this severance!

I am going the other way trying to get addresses to Apple mail. Plaxo has uploaders and downloaders too move addresses it did work, free to register. I was able to Move hotmail addresses and outlook contacts to My new Imac should be able to do the other way

Thanks for your info, but I think Plaxo is Mac-centric, although I've only had a look at the tour page, I've not actually signed up.
I'm thinking I'll have to move all of my Apple Mail stuff to a machine with Outlook Express on it, then export from there. Wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't 4GB of mail.

Plaxo is used by businesses to keep addresses updated. Most use it with PCs. Not sure it would work for all the mail. It is a thought

Solved.

Wow - your hundredth post was about a Mac then your hundred and first was off-topic.

Anyway - after anticipating having to jump through many hoops to bring my mail from Apple Mail to Windows Live Mail, downloading eml<>mbox software and nearly setting up OE on an old computer I figured out a quick and dirty way to do it.

I'd better add that I'm using Tiger 10.4/Windows7 x64 so not sure what other versions this applies to.

Apple Mail uses separate folders for storing local emails in, and stores each one as an emlx file.

To bring them into Windows Live Mail, copy them to your windows desktop, organise them however you like, then simply do a batch rename on them and change the suffix from .emlx to .eml
Then set up your folder structure however you like in Windows Live Mail and just drag the newly named .eml files into the message list of the folder you want them in.

That's it - well, it worked for me. I say it's quick and dirty as there seems to have been an encoding error on some messages, and the odd letter has become an equals sign, but I can live with that. All attachments appear to have been preserved.

I've just moved over 4500 emails (around 7GB) without a hitch!
