Ok so I unwittingly installed April's Important updates. I now have a pop-up telling me to activate Windows (it was activated days ago and is now showing as not activated).
I decided to remove the April updates. Only one of them is showing up under the list to remove updates. So I did a system restore back to two days ago. The April updates are all still there and I am still getting messages asking me to activate.
Incidentally I have owned this laptop for 7 years, it came with Windows 7 on and it is a genuine product key. I did a clean install and used the product key from the base of the laptop and activation was no issue - until now!
My processor is 1st generation so it's not the thing about later generation processors no longer being updated (I assume).
I think I have no alternative but to install the system image I made just before the April updates, after my clean install was complete (which means putting all my blooming files and programs back on again).
