Ok so I unwittingly installed April's Important updates. I now have a pop-up telling me to activate Windows (it was activated days ago and is now showing as not activated).

I decided to remove the April updates. Only one of them is showing up under the list to remove updates. So I did a system restore back to two days ago. The April updates are all still there and I am still getting messages asking me to activate.

Incidentally I have owned this laptop for 7 years, it came with Windows 7 on and it is a genuine product key. I did a clean install and used the product key from the base of the laptop and activation was no issue - until now!

My processor is 1st generation so it's not the thing about later generation processors no longer being updated (I assume).

I think I have no alternative but to install the system image I made just before the April updates, after my clean install was complete (which means putting all my blooming files and programs back on again).

Incidentally the five April updates that installed are

KB4015549 April 2017 Security Quality monthly roll-up

KB973688 Update for Microsoft XML Core services 4.0 Service pack 2 for x64 based systems

KB954430 Security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service pack 2 for x64 based systems

KB4014981 April 2017 Security and Quality roll-up for .NET framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008R2 for x64

KB890830 Windows Malicious Software removal tool x64 - April 2017

These are still installed after doing system restore, and when selecting to uninstall an update they do not show up to be uninstalled. Bah.

And I am still showing as not activated.

Thank you Layback Bear. I've already reinstalled from the image I made a few days ago now. It still showed as needing activation, which I did again online, and it is activated now.

I have turned Windows Update Off. I am up to date as of just before the April updates arrived. Before I turned it off I waited to see what Important updates came through and there are only three now, not five. Maybe they have pulled two of them?

The three that have now come through are KB4014981, KB4015549 and KB890830 (Malicious software tool). And it's the same on our other Windows 7 laptop which I have just turned on - just the three April updates now.

I have install the Roolup Updates on two system and have not had such a problem.

The logs still might give a clue of what the problem might be.

It cost nothing, give the tutorial a try and post the log here.
