I recently acquired an HP nc6400 laptop, and I'm in love with it. It has Windows XP currently.
Its specs are as follows:
Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz
ATi X1300 Mobility 512MB
2GB RAM

I was wondering if I'd be able to get my sound drivers, graphics drivers, and everything required to run Windows 7 properly, without any hiccups; so far everything looks okay, but I'm unsure about my sound drivers..all I know is that it is "SoundMAX." Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the quick response. I checked the HP site, and I didn't see anything Windows 7 related. Do you think they'll still work, or should I just wait until after Windows 7 releases?

There is a very nice HCL for Windows 7, you might check there to see what MS says about your (acquired) system.
Also the Manufacture Website usually has very nice FAQ's and Downloads for their products.
You might chek with them.

Hi, I have a pretty much identical NC6400 (possible slightly faster cpu) and Windows installed fine but once up and running it is unstable on reboots. I have had to reimage 5 times and still having issues. I thought it was an update causing problems but it doesnt look to be that as I disabled them. I can't figure out what is causing the problem. System restore doesn't fix it and there's nothing consistent with when it happens.

Does your NC6400 work ok with 7? If so which version? I am using 32bit pro.

Thanks!

I think the NC6400 is 32 bit only but will run any version of 7 fine (in theory...)

I did a clean install so maybe an upgrade would work better.

What a shame - you are letting some one elses post stop you from trying to install Win7.
recommend you run the win7 upgrade advisor.
Unless your system is 100% identical ( impossible ), then I'd still try and install Win 7.
Being a "Beta Tester for XP (Whistler), Vista, and Win 7. I would recommend you clean install Win7, and leave XP to become Windows.old.
you can then copy and paste all that you need or want into Win 7.
when your sure you have all the data you want. use the Clean HDD via Properties, and let Win 7 remove the windows.old .
Then you can DEFRAG and have a very fast Win 7.

#2. It your happy without any data from XP. FORMAT C: /FS:NTFS
then clean install Win 7 - average install time 25m to 35m.
And away we go.

Just an update on how things are going for me, Windows 7 seems to be more stable. I ran checkdisk on the new hdd and it seems to be fine, but I realised it never got formatted so I used the w7 disk to first partition the 320 gig drive then format my windows partition.

I now have a 200gig windows partion for w7 and approx another 100gig which I will either ghost my old hdd's xp onto if I get any more w7 issues or will put the new ubuntu onto.

I will report back if I have further issues, but at the moment so far so good. Also I got paragons free ghost like software so have a backup of my whole w7 install in a stable state so it will be less painful to get back to a running state.

Last week I wiped the HHD in my old gateway laptop; installed Win7 HomePre and the installed picked up every driver needed.

Clean devise manager and the system is oh so stable. This was a hell of a lot easier than doing a restore with the hidden partion by a long shot and now I have a super clean system without all the embedded programs that gateway loads up.
