Hello,

I have bought a Dell Optiplex 990 but without assuring me there was an OEM disc with it. So I have bought 2 disc OEM (win 7 pro sp1 x64 and win 7 ultimate sp1 x64) both black in color and it is written "Made In China" on the back stickers.
When I bought a brand new Dell pc shipped with windows xp it was written "Made In Germany" on the back sticker. Does Dell also make their oem disks in China ? Do you have made in china oem disks when you bought a Dell pc ? How can verify the disks without installing them ?

On the sticker on the Optiplex it is written win 7 pro sp1 x64. Can I install the ultimate version on it ?

Best regards.

It doesn`t matter where a disc is made, as long as it works.

You can install any version of windows you want, but if you want to use the COA with the W7 Pro key that`s on the PC then you have to install W7 Pro.

And no sticker will say x64 or x32 on it, as the key is good for both bit versions.

I don't want to install preinstalled spywares or something on cpu. And of course update may not work.

Best regards.

Hi RyosanCiffer,

Black versions of W7 were issued.
Couple of things to consider before you install
The full title should read OEM SYSTEM BUILDER, not just OEM no such animal
Check the product key, google the last 3 groups of the code - multiple hits = bad news.
The various descriptions on the disk MUST match those that are on the packaging.

If the Optiplex 990 came with Win 7, it has a Factory recover partition.
If the Factory recover partition is still on the disk, you should do the recovery disk so you can reinstall as it came from Dell.
Also, if it has a COA sticker with the key on it, you can download the ISO file (any language) from M$ (for free) and then install and it will activate.

The disks you bought are probably pirate copies.

Thanks, this a dell dvd and I dont see oem system builder neither oem.
But if you mean the CN-XXXXXX-CXXXX-XXX-XXXX like code. I googled the last 3 groups of the key and
it give no result on google.

I scan both dvd with avg find no virus so I decided to take the risk to install. I first tried ultimate and it failed at the step next to expand windows file, cannot install language package, installation cancelled or something. After several try I installed win7 pro and it worked but internet drivers were not installed maybe because the dvd was not meant to be use with this model of dell. So I will have to install drivers manually from cd or usb. I still have to check if its genuine. I would have prefered to install ultimate.

I think i formatted the factory recovery partition like a desperate idiot. I tried my key on m$ download site and it say I should contact dell but I think it's not under warranty do dell wont send me a disk. I will try though. I found a non oem win 7 ultimate for 100$ to buy but I hesitate.

Regards

Best regards.

Why would you think there is spyware on the discs and why would you think windows update would not work ?

I`m sure there`s nothing wrong with them, just install Windows 7 Pro.

There is no reason to install Ultimate, you don't need it.

And of course you will have to install your network drivers, they are not on the W7 install dvd.

As you stated thier Dell discs - therefor NOT for resale and marked as such

They are more than likely ReInstallation discs, and SHOULD only be issued with the original machine.

They DO NOT come with a product code, that begs the question where did it come from.
Should state Dell OEM W7 Pro, i wouldnt be surprised if it was taken from another machine

MS no longer provide direct downloads for W7 OEM editions.

Mega mentioned the original COA sticker affixed to your comp, if it was for Pro its still valid.
You may not have even needed to enter a code on reinstall, the first validation check is Bios based.

once installed run this tool, copy/paste the output and i will be able to tell you more
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

As your comps max RAM is 16GB, theres not a lot of point in running Ultimate.

You have a W7 Pro COA on the pc case (so you said) you do not need to buy anything, just install W7 Pro and use the key on the COA on the PC to activate W7 Pro
