...even though I've set it to "no password" in all of the power plans. I also changed it on the main power settings screen, where it has "require password.." on the left. I click on that and select "no password" there as well.

Screen saver is set to "none"

I'm about to remove the password from my login account altogether, just to get rid of this annoyance.

Is there something else that could be causing this behavior? Because I am at wit's end with this issue. The only band-aid I have is to run the Caffeine utility to prevent the system from sleeping.

Did you install SP1 for 7? This could be unrelated but I know that SP1 has caused issues with Win7 and sleep state behavior. Perhaps you've been hit by this bug?

Here is something to try.

Create a new user account, and then try doing what you stated above to that user account and test it.

If it holds, corrupt profile is the answer. Otherwise, I would suggest running a sfc /scannow from a command prompt.

Its Windows 7 without SP1, though I will be installing SP1 this weekend, maybe even tonight after I image my system.

Hmm, are the power plan settings stored in the user profile? Or are they machine-wide? I might try that idea if I get time.

Power profile is specific to each user for sure.
