I get emails with attachments and would like to double click on the attachment and get a list of possible apps to use. So far all I get is the notice that the appropriate Microsoft Office app isn't available. I can go to the attachment in Windows Explorer and choose a suitable app, but I would like top see a list of the ones I use come when I click on the email program attachment and have my list come up. How can I do this?

Maybe this little program can help: OpenExpert - open-with for explorer's context menu - freeware

BTW: there are free Word, Power Point and Excel readers from Microsoft available on the web. No need to use e.g. Open Office to open those. But those are, of course, only readers and you cannot do any further processing.

But it should be possible to associate one of your preferred programs to the corresponding filetype.

I tried the app you suggested but it doesn't help within my email. If I double click on the attachment in the email I get the following message." FSH-4.doc could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences". Why can't I get the same message that I used to get in XP where I would get a notice that windows doesn't know how to open the attachment and gives me the option to provide a list of possible apps" Any way to do this?

What is the filetype of the files you are trying to open and what is the program you would like to use for the open?

In this case it is a .doc file and I would use Open Office.

Did you try this: Go here: Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations, navigate to and highlight .doc, go to Change Program and navigate to the .exe of the open office program in question (in Program Files on C). Double click on that. Then you can set it as default in Open with window.

I tried that and changed it from Microsoft Office to Open Office. I still get the same message in my email client. I assume if I were to save the attachment and double click on it I would most likely open with Open Office. Any more suggestions?
