ASUS laptop, freezing after having been asleep, occasional BSOD.

Ok thanks. So, if your hunch is correct, this will stop the freezing altogether, correct?

You have any ideas on why my system restore isn't working now?

On another note, we'll see what happens with the webcam disabled, but another thing I thought of was, when I say asleep, it could actually be hibernating, as I'm not sure how long she lets the computer sit before thios freezing happens, but either way, it shouldn't be doing what it's doing, whether it's been asleep, or hibernating, but thought I'd throw that out there.

Tonight it just froze in the middle of doing something, and she said it's NEVER done that, so don't know what that is about, or if it's related, new, or...whatever.

Ok, it froze twice again today, while she was using it, and it never did that before, only after it had been asleep/hibernating. That happened after I came here for help, and she's almost convinced something I downloaded here, could be the cause. I know better, but I can see how she's thinking that. She doesn't understand that the couple things I've done here, to get info, haven't removed anything, or done anything to her laptop. It's obviously some weird coincidence. But yeah, that's where I'm at. I've gone on forums like this quite a few times to resolve computer issues, and for various things, so I'm used to it, she's not.

Golden....if you something glaring in that last report I uploaded, that would point at the reason for the freezing, I'm all ears.

On that note, I can't help think that, just to cut to the chase, that a repair install would be smart right now. She wouldn't have to worry about saving pictures and documents, or getting all the correct drivers, like she would on a clean install.

I have an ISO on a flash drive and on dvd, and if I'm understanding it correctly, it just writes over the top of the current OS, while saving all current setting, pictures, documents, and files, and essentially "fixes" whatever might be wrong, correct?

Did you see anything unusual in the zip file I uploaded?

I appreciate all your help with this, and I understand how it works, my wife isn't used to getting forum help like I am. I still want to get to the bottom of it.

On a different tack and out of curiousity have you tested that drive?? if not I would be inclined to run one and use this SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

I would also take a look at the emps mate Speccy - Free Download - Piriform send back any results.

Yes, we disabled that driver, as she doesn't use the webcam anyway.

I got that report after it had frozen while she was using it, so I guess it's safe to assume it's something else causing the freezing.

I have not tested the drive, but could do that.

What do you mean, run on mains power all the time? Do you mean is it plugged in all the time? If so, she does leave it plugged in, a lot. She doesn't have a desktop right now, so it stays in place most of the time.

I will try and check out the drive and do that other test you linked to, this weekend. She was using it last night, and was hesitant to have me do anything else to check it, but she's letting go of that, I think. She was talking about upgrading to 10, which in theory, could fix everything, or just make things worse, so.....

I meant do you run it on battery power for any length of time? Because if you do and the battery is not really up to specs it is possible it could be a source of problems.

The upgrade I don't see that as a cure and having used it myself am not going to again in the near future.

Thanks for the reply. Actually no, she uses it plugged in most if the time. It replaced her aging desktop, so to speak. Occasionally she brings it out in the kitchen or whatever, but mainly, it's plugged in.

I have been hesitant to upgrade to 10 myself, as I don't see a great reason to, and there are definitely mixed reviews.

Ok.....so I ran the S.M.A.R.T. test, the Short Drive Self Test, and a Short Generic, and they all passed. I didn't do the long generic test, as it said it would take 2 hours, but if you think I should, I can.

Something else maybe worthy of mentioning......I went back and checked that webcam driver that suspected of causing the freezing/BSOD after having been asleep, and it was enabled again. Shouldn't it stay disabled? I'm assuming it's enabling itself on restart or?? I disabled it again. I guess I could uninstall the software??

Hello sorry late reply now just how did you disable the webcam? I am just wondering if you disabled it (usually I find the easy way) in the BIOS and not rely on some Windows/machine feature - just like you do with touchpads for example.

I disabled it in device manager, and Golden told me that was the correct way.

Oh.....did you see a couple posts back, where I posted which tests I ran with SeaTools, the test you asked me to run? I also posted the Speccy results, like you asked.

Yep sorry just been been a bit tested with my work machine for couple of days temps are fine.
