Been everywhere trying to figure out this problem. Emachines ET-1831-03 box, with Intel ES-300 dual core 2.6 ghz processors,. Ran fine, then SATA Seagate 750 gb HD failed. Received the correct system restore CD's from both emachines and Asus. Attempted to reinstall Win7 home Premium 64 bit on alternative 80 gb WD IDE hard drive (having removed the defective 750 gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 from the machine). Also installed 2 gb DDR2 which tested fine, to insure no RAM errors. Recovery CD's go thru entire restore process, and say to remove the last CD and restart. On restart - I get only the black screen with the "MBR01 Error" message.
RAM has been tested. Obviously the motherboard and CPU are OK, because it loads the system CD, and does the complete recovery install process. I am a retired IT professional, and this is the first time I have been stymied by an operating system re-install. I've tried variations in the BIOS settings for about 10 tries, with the same negative results. What am I missing?

Try reinstall to SATA HD Drive, with Acer Recovery Disks.

Back several years ago, eMachines had a rash of motherboard problems and had to replace them.
I worked for 6 months on a customer's system until I'd replace nearly all parts (under warranty) and still had issues. I saw this guy daily for the entire 6 months.

When I finally gave up and sent it to the Service Center - it came back with a new mobo, and the guy hasn't been back in the shop since!!!

MBR01 Error isn't a Windows error - so it'd have to be an error with the Asus disks.
Are you trying to use the Asus disks to install on the eMachines? If so, it's likely that the Asus disks are locked to Asus systems only.

Actually, theog solved the initial problem. Thanks!
I installed a WD SATA 160 gb drive, and the install went perfectly.... EXCEPT: now I cannot connect to the internet via my broadband. My XP machine connects just fine to the cable, but when I connect that same cable to the emachine's port, it tells me the cable is disconnected or some such... I downloaded the proper 64-bit drivers from Realtek (PCIE FE Family controller), and loaded them - same result. Message says disconnected cable. Device driver says NIC is working normallly. What's up?

USASMA: Thanks for the suggestions. It could be the mobo... emachines had sent recovery disks for the specific machine, but because I was in error trying to install on an older IDE drive, I contacted Asus (Per emachines instructions) and they sent me a set of recovery disks which are exactly like the emachines version.. I know Asus manufactured this PC for emachines, but I think the mobo is ECS - who doesn't have a very good reputation at all.
Gonna try putting a pci NIC in the box and see what happens....

Do you have a spare Net card you could fit.

Well, I FINALLY solved the last problem. Seems the Cat5 socket on the emachine motherboard is a bit oversize, and when I tipped the plug up a bit - bingo - network was on. Junky hardware at best....
Acer politely told me I could send it back to them and for ONLY $199.000, they'd repair it. Never will buy another Acer product. Arrogant jerks!!!
Thanks for all your input - you solved what the manufacturer couldn't or wouldn't....
