Asus Z370-E ROG/Strix working but need PCI-simple communications cont

***<Update>
Have everything working with Win 7 on my Gen 8 3.7 intel and ASUS Z370-E 300 series board except the only error message that keeps showing up under device manager is "PCI simple communications controller"... which I understand is a AMT/Management Engine something or other I need. I've downloaded chipset stuff both for Win7 and Win10 from ASUS but no luck so far getting that triangle to go away...

any advice?
***</update>

I have just put together a system.
Asus Strix 300 series board
8'th gen 3.7 Intel processor
GTX 1070

Is there any way in the universe to get these running? I tried installing Win 7 and have run into the USB issue but got it to recognize my keyboard. Software from ASUS doesn't run at all, says "This operating system not supported"... So the front door is closed

Is there a way to manually get this thing running in terms of drivers for the board etc...?

I've worked with Win10, seen how it doesn't let you control things even when you edit the registry etc... It was bad all around in terms of no control, no privacy... I am willing to sacrifice some performance if I can still run Win7 for another 3 or 4 years. Win 10 was horrible but I also PC game... I'm stuck here...

Welcome to the Forum.

Did you succeed to install Win 7?
If yes, do you have mouse and keyboard?
For now, set Windows Update to Manual under services and Never check on WU page.

You must install all drivers, specially SATA and USB3.x. They probably are on the CD that came with the Asus MB.

Windows is running in a limited fashion. The USB 2.0 ports on the board seem to not recognize anything except my old fashioned plug in mouse and keyboard. No thumb drives or external HD's are recognized.

I can't get anywhere with the stuff on Asus's support/download site for the board.

I don't quite know enough to manually extract everything from their install CD which refuses to run on Win7.

Asus EZ-installer did create a bootable thumb drive with USB 3.0 drivers on it that WOULD work, but the bios CSM control over-rides it when I boot from it. Even when I turn CSM off it turns itself back on!!!!

I get the feeling these hardware manufacturers are trying pretty hard to push everyone to win10 also... sh@tty process so far.

It isn't the hardware manufacturers that are trying pretty hard to push everyone to win10. It's M$ that is trying to kill their best OS to make money selling users profile collected on Win 10.

On BIOS, fast boot must be set OFF.

Open device manager, with the snipping tool take a snapshot of whole window with the missing drivers, save to the disk and post it here as an attachment. Use the paper clip (top right on answering window), browse to the file - upload.

Can you see the files on the Asus CD?

I can see the files on the ASUS disk and have been poking around trying to run the individual sub-programs without much luck. I REALLY want to avoid going to the dark side and get this build working... I feel like i'm close but being held back. Wish I knew how to manually add drivers in the registry.

I also want to take this time to learn Linux and make this system a dual boot, but that's another topic entirely... Please save me from the dark side. :)

I just took some pictures of the device manager since my new build is effectively cut off from the world and won't recognize USB devices like a thumb drive... (somehow it is recognizing my old plug in mouse and keyboard on the USB 2.0 ports, sometimes...)

You need to install the missing drivers. You don't add them to the register. Windows search for them and install. You just have to point where to look for.
On device manager, put the mouse cursor over Ethernet controller - right click - update driver - browse to the CD and let it search on it (and sub folders).
Do for the other missing drivers.

Instead of taking photos, use the sniping tool - %windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe

Thanks, I'll try manually searching the CD. I can't connect to the internet nor use USB drives on the system in question so I would literally have to burn a CD or swap out a hard drive to upload a direct screen cap, so taking a picture is much quicker. Once it gets connected; sure.

It's an Asus Z370-E ROG/STRIX board and 8'th gen intel 3.7 processor... forget Ram and exact graphics card but will get shots of that later.

Update: I changed the UEFI setting in the ASUS Z370-E bios to "Legacy UEFI", I believe... and then ASUS ez-installer/bootloader would load from a flash drive.

I have working Win7 with the 8'th gen board and processor now, USB 3.0 is working, ethernet etc... so that's enough to say the build is up for me. Still have to do some tuning and see about PCI-E drivers but it's recognizing the GTX1070 Graphics card etc....

It's Great you have it running.
- Fist thing you have to do now is to make sure all the drivers are installed (see the device manager)
- Second will be the Windows updates. DON'T turn on WU to automatic. M$ is installing a update that will block futures updates.
Use the offline SP2 and then the security ONLY updates. MS releases SP2 for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums
Unofficial Patch Unblocks Windows 7 and 8.1 Updates for Kaby Lake, Ryzen - ExtremeTech

When I get a chance to sit down and look at it again I will check drivers etc...

To be honest, I never updated my last system past SP1 at all. I have always manually acquired drivers for my hardware and run a third party AV and software firewall... That system has run for 5 years without any issues. Is there any major performance stuff I'd be missing with gaming if I never update past SP1?

Hehe... I hear ya. I never trusted Microsoft, from the days I first moved from DOS to Windows to play the first game that wouldn't run in DOS... So I have always viewed windows installations as disposable. I set restore points, run 3'rd party AV and Firewall stuff, but really have not messed with updates much. Last install is up 5years and still running, but if it died tomorrow I don't mind reinstalling my things... My media is all on separate hard drives and backed up...

I view the windows OS the same way I view toilet paper... necessary, disposable and Sh#tty. :) (no offense, I'm in the same boat as everyone else using Windows, just super happy I got Win7 to work on the new build!)
