The reason I'm asking is because I am seriously considering purchasing this motherboard. It isn't exactly inexpensive and I've heard conflicting stories. I would like to hear from someone who actually has had some hands-on experience with it. I would especially like to hear from someone who has installed it in a build. Any advice on installation and what to look out for would be greatly appreciated. ALSO: I've heard rumors that Intel will be making their next line of cpu chips (the 6900 series) to only be fully compatible with Windows 10 and up. This is a grave concern for me as I wish to keep my Win 7 o/s for as long as possible.

Used it? Heck, I can't even find the darned thing except the occasional one being sold by dodgy speculators who have jacked up the price. Asus claims it's still in production (their customer service is worse than pathetic) but doesn't list it on their website unless you do a specific search, suggesting it actually has been discontinued.

The WS board has more PCI-e slots for either running more graphics cards (4 at x16 though some people have succeeded at running more using PCI-e riser cables) or for adding more expansion cards. The two PEX chips essentially allow more than 40 PCI-e lanes to be used at once. The board also has more SATA ports plus a couple of eSATA ports. It is a much more flexible board with no PCIe slot sharing limiting the use of the slots with other ports. For someone planning on staying with the Win 7 for sometime, especially if planning on running it past early 2020, it's ideal because of its expansion capacity.

Aside from any drastic changes to internet protocol I should think that I would be able to use Windows 7 indefinitely on a good Family Server/Work Station/Entertainment Engine. My 8 year old is still using Windows XP Media Center and I dread the day I will have to break it to her gently that if she wants a new PC she's going to have to settle for something slightly better than Windows Vista. Technically, I am a man without a PC as this one will be moving down the line and I'm only "borrowing" it for testing purposes before I release it to "she who desires to be understood". Satisfying the individual requirements of four females has proven to be an exhilarating challenge. They are often my toughest customers.
I was impressed with what I read about the USB 3.0 version of this Asus workstation board and started up my X99E WS fund nearly two years ago. The USB 3.0 version has been discontinued whereas the 3.1 version can be located... For a price. I'm sure the present economy isn't helping much on costs but I have enough banked now to get started on the mobo and a little ram. Of course I'll be keeping my case (which has already been gutted) and the peripherals, minus the backup drives and external clunk drives. Before embarking on this venture I thought it would be prudent to interrogate someone who has actually done it because I've only been building PCs for a decade which, in my opinion, still qualifies me for Noob status. I was thinking that the 6900K would be a safe choice. I'm clueless as to what anyone would do with 20 threads in any standard domestic setting. Video rendering would likely be as brave a venture as I would take but it's nice to have the speed when one needs it regardless of the application. (No pun intended.) HOWEVER... I'm wishing and hoping there is no merit to the rumor that Intel refuses to cater to old o/s updates with respect to these chips. I rather love Windows 7 and if I can't use it a divorcement from Microsoft may be pending. I expressed these concerns in my opening post. Admittedly I'm a little naive about this hence my attempt to garner more info. Do I hear Linux calling?

The wife is getting the Sabertooth Z87 I'm using right now. The build is nearly complete. Most of what was inside my Thermaltake case is now inside a Pink Apevia (minus raid cages, DVD drives, card reader, and PSU). Sadly, I just discovered that I-Rocks doesn't want to release the keyboard/mouse series that "she who must be understood" wants for sale in North America. I nearly got the 5930 myself, including the same mobo but I really want many of the features available in the work station don't exist on the Sabertooth. Still, you can't go wrong with that 5 year warranty and Sabertooth quality. Native USB 3.1 must be mighty sweet. Nice rig

I'm still hoping someone here has put a rig together using this specific motherboard and that they are able to give me a few tips and any warnings that might come in handy before I purchase it. I'm in no rush. The chip I want hasn't even been released for retail yet. Intel only started production in January. It should be available by summer. If I ever learned anything valuable about building your own desktop it's research, research, research.

Now that was the USB 3.0 version. Currently Newegg.ca has the USB 3.1 listed for considerably more. I wish I would have purchased it when it was first released for $629.00 Canadian but I was hoping they would have dropped it under six bills by Boxing Day and I wanted to read the reviews first - which turned out to be significantly mixed. Instead of going down in price it went up 100 bucks and it keeps on going up. So yeah, maybe a summer build?
