At the request of the Federal Trade Commission, a federal court has shut down a company that scammed computer users by tricking them into paying hundreds of dollars for technical support services they did not need, as well as software that was otherwise available for free.

Freezing assets sounds good but the big money is probably in a account in a country where they will be very difficult to get.
Very very very long time in prison would be a good starting place.

That's exactly what happened to someone at the Senior Center where my wife works. About 5 weeks ago a company that sounds very similar to that one cold called these people, told them they were affiliated with MS, remotely accessed their PC & charged them for "optimization" services & what they claimed was "their software." The tool they said was theirs was JRT. They charged them $199.00 for the software & a 3 year contract.

I advised the lady to contact her credit cards fraud division & see if there was anything they could do. Last time I saw her, she said the company was looking into what the options were.

True another one will pop up.
If you lock up the ones that are caught long enough they won't be doing such things for decades. Once the word get out if your caught the price you pay in many years in a Buba or Bubaet prison the attacks will slow down.

The penalties have to be raised or it will never slow down.

Asset seizure is better than nothing. However probably difficult to get hold of most of the assets and the money will long have gone to some off shore untouchable bank account.

The best punishment is SERIOUS JAIL TIME in a TOUGH PRISON.

I think they may be just the American branch.
The times that I got calls from this same scam, in the background, It sounded like a lot of people involved.

In Aust, After M$ support, they also tried Telstra support too.

There were replies from England too.

They need to track these peoples contacts too, ie business partners, relatives, anyone they have been in contact with.

I agree. I just got a call from one and kept them on the phone as long as I could. They eventually hung up on me.

My brother got a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft saying that they had identified an issue with his computer. They pointed him to a website that offered remote support capabilities. He then hung up. I've dealt with a few techs from their premium server support services for my job so I know that they just don't call people up so I told him that if they try to contact him again not to answer and block the number. Microsoft waits for people to call them and not the other way around.
