Would appreciate your help.

Have a friend with AT&T ISP (guessing DSL) using a Desktop and modem. Now she got laptop and a tablet, and needs to connect to the Internet.

As I see it, she needs a router, or something like a 3G USB dongle. Am I correct, or, are there other options?

If she gets a router does AT&T have to set it up, or, is it a simple connect for her to do?

Thank you! :)

I've got AT & T as my ISP.
The modem supplied is also the router.

When she opens laptop or tablet, it should automatically recognize it.
(I also use it for my smartphone to save data charges.)

If not:

All she has to do is go to Control panel>Network and sharing center and "Connect to a network".
It will ask for password, which is on the modem.

It will then recognize her tablet or smartphone, laptop, etc.

Thanks for the info!!

The friend called to tell me she is running Windows Vista vs. Windows 7.

When she has opened the laptop or tablet, neither has been automatically recognized.

It may be that it needs set up as you mention, and, guess the procedure in Vista is similar. However, she had this modem for quite a few years. Not sure it is a modem/router. Have another friend with ATT ISP for quite a few years, and their modem has no router capabilities. They had to get a router.

She may have to call AT&T to find out exactly what she has...
