I recently installed Windows 7 on a machine that was previously running stable on XP. Since the upgrade the machine has been freezing several times a day and I have received two BSOD dumps. In analyzing the dumps it appears that the issues are related to ATAPI.SYS and NETIO.SYS, but I'm not sure where to go from here. Any ideas/tips would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note, I used this forum when I built a new machine when Windows 7 first came out in 2008 and you guys and gals did not disappoint. Thank you for all your help!

Hi H0lyD1ver.

The two BSODs are totally different in nature, and there is a reasonable time gap between them (11 days).

Just for a caution, scan the system for possible virus infection with the following programs.

And, go to ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download M4A78LT-M LE

Get the latest BIOS, version 0803 from there.

Also get the Atheros Ethernet Utility V1.1.0.7 for Windows XP 32bit/XP 64bit/Vista 32bit/Vista 64bit/7
Version 1.1.0.7, available under LAN.

Let us know the result.

Thank you for responding.

I ran the Atheros Ethernet Utility and it passed all the tests on the one tab.
I ran TDSSKiller and it didn't find anything.
Couldn't get the computer to boot off my thumbdrive to try Windows Defender. I'll try a CD tomorrow.

When I tried to update the BIOS I downloaded both BIOS-Utilities on that page, but both came up with the error "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I'm running 64-bit and the BIOS-Utility says it's for 64-bit.

What page downloaded from?

To better help us to help you would you please add your systems specs? Here's the correct way to do it. :SystemInfo See Your System Specs Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built. Very important

Log in to Seven Forums and you will be able to transfer the info directly to the specs page in your profile from within the System Info app.

Your System Specs here.

After doing this your specs will be available in each of your posts.
Click on My system Specs in the lower left of this post to see how it should look.:)
Full instructions are in the tutorial.

To update the BIOS you will need a USB flash drive and format it with FAT32, a small 1GB is fine. It must have only the downloaded BIOS file on it on a single partition.

Thank you for the responses. I forgot about the flash utility in most (if not all) BIOS.

I've flashed the BIOS. I've updated my system specs. I'm about to run Windows Defender.

Alright - I'm still getting freezes, but hopefully they're less frequent. I'm not the one using the machine but he says it is consistently frozen when he tries to use it in the morning (after being left on overnight).

Any other ideas?

A morning freeze may occur by a number of reasons.

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Check if the Power Supply Unit (PSU) supplying adequate power to the computer or not.
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator
Also let us know the wattage of the PSU.

Plus, a dismantle, cleaning up and re-seating of hardware may help a great lot.

Also I will eager to see what Britton30 suggests.

I'm running memtest 86+ on the 2x4GBs right now and have swapped 2x2GB from another machine.

It has a 420W PSU, so we should be good there (1x DVD drive, 2X HDD, 2 sticks RAM, Phenom x4, no dedicated graphics card).

To me, the weirdest thing about this stability issue is the fact that it was running flawlessly a few weeks ago on XP (32-bit). The freezes didn't occur until I did a fresh install of Windows 7 (64-bit).

Windows 7 requires bit of more system resources than XP to run flawlessly.

Let us know the result of memtest.

Ugh...
I just did a fresh install of Win 7 and ran Prime95 and it only ran for one hour and 15 (or so) minutes before it crashed :(, but it didn't report any errors (in Prime95) :), and it didn't BSOD, so there are no dumps to analyze :(.

All that is installed is:
Chipset Drivers (and I made sure BIOS is up-to-date)
Graphics Driver
LAN Utility Driver
AVG Antivirus and another business program (both of which work on other machines running Windows 7, so I don't think these are causing the issue)

Attachments are SF Log Collector files and Prime95 results log.

At this point we need to know the system temperature. Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy. Alternatively, you can publish a Speccy snapshot too: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/311593-speccy-publish-snapshot-your-system-specs.html .

It is not sounding good, if there is not an information gap.

Before taking a big decision, can you spend some more time on attempt to troubleshoot?

First run 8 more passes of Memtest86+, if it is free from errors again, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

   Tip

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.
