Hi guys, I have an Atheros AR9285 WiFi card in my laptop, and the other day, it just became very unstable with the connection and it is giving me very low transfer speeds.

I've come to think that a Windows Update replaced the driver in it, how could I fix it, or fix the problem?

Thanks alot guys!

You can search the model number online and add "drivers" with or with out the quotations; and there should be a download link in the first 20 results just make sure its a reputable website you're downloading from.

When you run the installer you'll often have an uninstall option if they're already installed. Un install and reinstall and see if that fixes the issue.

Other things to look for are you torrenting? is your cpu always at 100% (would indicate some kind of malware)? you should check your start up programs to make sure that there isn't anything starting up and running in the back ground.

Also where are you in relation to the router/modem? You'd be surprised how much of a difference a few walls make.

Anytime you think an update or other system change has negatively affected your OS you should first try a "System Restore" and restore to a point before the suspected change was made. System Restore will reverse driver installs.

But also consider your router, modem, or ISP. Interference can affect wireless networks - like cordless phones, appliances, etc. Also try resetting your modem and/or router. Unplug the power from them for about 30 seconds, then power them back on. Can't hurt, might help.

Many times a wide area network slowdown is out "in the lines" and not on your local PC. These disruptions can take hours to days to correct depending on where you are.

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions. I am still having SOME problems, not as bad though. I installed the HP Atheros drivers, and the connection is more stable, but it still drops it sometimes.

Also, I'm pretty sure I don't have any malware because I just re-installed windows a few days ago.

Any other causes?
