Atheros Wireless Drivers?

I have a D-Link DWA 552 Xtreme wireless adapter, and to be quite honest with you, It has been a real drag having that thing. MY MBP gets 22MBPS but my Gaming pc gets 2.3MBPS. I got the current driver running from D-Links website but its still causing the computer to crash and get a real crappy internet speed. I will open another thread with more information about this problem and more specific. But the real question is will a updated Atheros Wireless driver help? Does Atheros have anything to do with D link? I read this in a diffrent post, just want some clarification. Thanks!

Its probably due to the fact that desktops prefer hard wire (CAT5) over wireless due to the ammount of EMI (electro magnetic interference) produced by the higher voltage, current and overall power of the components inside and nearby (printers speaker etc). If your wifi card has a detachable antenna you may benefit from one (with or without GAIN) on a cable so you can position it on the desk away from most of the nasty EMI.

For example: Eforcity 3 pack Wi-Fi Wireless Antenna / Router Signal Booster | Overstock.com

Atheros on this forum anyway seem to have a lot of issues I've noticed I don't know why but 70% of the problems have this manufacturer for their wireless.

Does that also relate to the computer crashing?

Not likely. The drivers are probably to blame for this, but you should be able to figure that out quickly. Getting a driver directly from Atheros could solve the crashing and yield a better speed, but possibly not the increase you are looking for.

Anyway, to piggyback on something said above, if you want to use a wireless adapter with a desktop/tower, switch to a USB one with a long cable, so you can bring the actual adapter away from the tower. I've set up a few for friends and family members, and I always have the best luck running the cable up a wall and mounting the adapter well above the tower.

As deacon said, EMI should not cause crashes! And yes his method is the same principal, get the antenna or entire adapter away from your rig. The cables to and from the adapter/antenna are (or at least should be) shielded against interference.

My card comes with 3 antenas...someone told me to remove 2 antenas and leave 1 to reduce interference? true or false?

If the device's own antennas were interfering with each other....that would be a major design flaw and the company wouldn't be in business anymore.

As far as I'm aware the 3 antennae editions are wireless N (draft) network adapters and should be performing much better when paired with a wireless N router. If you are using a USB wireless N adapter make sure it's in a USB2.0 compliant slot, most USB slots on modern hardware are USB2.0 and more frequently USB3.0 are becoming available. If you get a ballon telling you this device could perform faster when you plug it in it may be worth checking the BIOS to make sure these ports are USB2 enabled.
