ATI 4200 Chipset Issue Memory Error?

I have an HP P6774Y PC i just purchased and it seems that Illustrator CS5 will not export anything above 72 DPI in PSD format. It gives me the "Not enough memory to save the file" error. I never had this occur on my old computer system i had that was a generic. This is a brand new HP Pavilion with more than enough memory to support graphics. Can it be that the ATI 4200 integrated graphics card needs to be replaced with a PCI G/C?

My old computer had a Nvidia 6600GT 512MB 128-bit AGP card and it was very fast. I'm confused at what the issue might be and of course the sales person said i would have no problem with this system performing as is out of the box. This is the only reason i purchased it.

Thank you for your insight and help, i really appreciate it!

Revelation, welcome to the Seven Forums.

One thing with the onboard HD 4200, it doesn't have any memory of its own and uses shared system memory? Knowing how HP likes to operate they probably set it to the minimum. Have a quick look in the bios (and hopefully HP hasn't hidden the option) probably in the Advanced section under Chipset (this could be a different name as the board is made by Foxconn), and look for anything to do with the onboard graphics and if it is set to anything less than 256 MB, set it there. That should be enough and if it isn't and it will allow it, with 6 GB of system ram you can set it to 512 MB instead.

Thank you for the quick response stormy, but being that this onboard type of graphics is new to me, i have one silly question. How do i access the BIOS to make the settings you suggested and will this mean that i do not have to purchase a PCI Xpress graphics card?

Thank you!

How do i access the BIOS

It should say somewhere on the HP loading screen when you first turn on the computer. If not try hitting F1 while the HP screen is showing; it could also possibly be F2, F8, Del.

Stormy,

When i accessed the BIOS (F10) the Onboard graphics was set to PCI, which i do not have installed. I changed it to Onboard graphics and still nothing. I couldn't see anything else about graphics or a chipset.. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Wrong section and setting unfortunately. I had a look at the manual for a similarly spec'ed Foxconn motherboard, and if HP used a similar bios with various features/settings b locked as they are known to do then there is a very good chance that there is no way to adjust that setting. From the manual I looked at the onboard graphics settings are under a section called "Overclock Control Center",

occ.PNG

with the actual settings in the "IGP Configuration" section,

igp.PNG

Let's come at it from another direction and at least see how much memory has been allocated to the onboard graphics. Grab this,

GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

and post a screen shot of it please.

As for those bios pictures, I'll not say what I think of HP intentionally crippling what the chipset is capable of by hiding those features/settings from users. It is one thing to hide the settings for overclocking but they are also removing useful features from it as well like this,

ATI Hybrid Graphics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That allows for using the onboard video with any AMD video card to allow using up to 4 monitors (or more depending on which of the HD 5xxx or 6xxx series of cards are used).

Ok Stormy,

This is what it shows. I don't know if this will tell you how i can access it or if i need to get a PCI card..

At least they set it to a reasonable minimum. Also looking here,

Adobe Forums: Search

it doesn't look like it is your graphics that is the problem, but something else.

Hey Stormy,

I think you're going to love this. I went to BestBuy to tell them how crappy this computer is and when i got home i tried to export the file and low and behold, when i uncheck Anti-Aliasing in the export dialog box, it works?? I ran several tests on (2) files that were 85MB each and it worked in 72, 150 and 300 dpi.

Have you a clue as to what is going on here?

Thanks for all of your help!

No idea, but from this thread for that Adobe forums link I posted,

Adobe Forums: Not enough memory to save file.

it definitely isn't your hardware or Windows as the person in that thread had the same problem and did the same thing to fix it on a iMac.

Yes and thank you for all of your help Stormy!

I'm still getting another graphics card just to speed things up a bit.
