Hello Cambell, Welcome!

Could you please give us a few more details? What do you mean, "it would not recognize my PC"? What made a whining noise?

Is it possible that the card is not seated properly?

Thanks,
~Jonathan

Thanks for the reply's.Ok I will try to explain what is happening as simply as possible. When I take the old card out of it's slot,I replace it with the new one.As soon as its in its slot there is a whining noise coming from the new card. The screen remains blank while the card is in it's slot. When the card is removed the noise from the card ceases.I connect my old card again and everything works fine.I cant explain it any better sorry.I am assuming that I have a dud card.

Ugh, I'm no specialist but I've always turned my system completely off before I added or removed any cards from my system. Maybe one of the other guys will know if trying to add it while power is on could do that?

Do you have the computer on when switching video cards? Sorry if I'm confused.

Tried it both ways.
so you plugged it in the pc-i with no power connecters plugged in the card? maybe the whining was from the lack of power the card was getting ,anyway
whatever you do dont ever try adding a new gpu when computer is on:eek::eek: .
switch off and turn off power at plug socket
make sure you uninstall all of ure drivers for ure last card
shut computer completely down.
add gpu make sure its seated properly in pc-i slot add power connecters.
boot up hopefully it should boot and then you can add ure 5870 drivers.
you need to always reboot when adding hardware because ure bios need to load all the hardware etc..

that whining noise is common with high end graphics card
but it usually only happens when its really being stressed out
im not too sure the damage that could of happened by just adding it when pc is on ,if any

also if still not working try putting it in someone elses pc to make sure the gpu isnt DOA

Turn of PC first before you remove old card! And make sure you have got the PCI-E connecter(s) connected to the 5870 from the PSU (Power Supply Unit)

it does sound like a power issue, the ''whining'' noise is usually related to the power passing through the transistors, but as stated above its only when the card is loaded...which tells me the card is probably straining itself upon start up.

if you cant get to the BIOS its gotta be either a faulty card or lack of power.

if the ''whining'' is coming from the fan you need to return it, these new 5 series cards are suffering with a loose fan sitting in the cooler shroud.... just FYI ;)

Sorry for not replying back sooner,as I work away.It was because the 6 pin leads that were not connected to the power supply that was the prob.I am now very happy that i have a cracking graphics card.Happy new year to you all.

Hi,

skunksmash you mention a loose fan in the cooling shroud on 5 series. my 5870 has a whine at standard fan speed (21%), it sometimes comes and goes.. but it can be annoying, it isn't that loud... I notice you're in UK, me too, do you think I should RMA? Manufacturer is HIS.

Appreciate any advice you can give. thanks v much

well...... if it is a loose fan sitting in the shroud its easily confirmed. ;)

turn off the system, get inside your case, & with your fingers gently hold the fan hub (the circular area in the middle) & gently twist it from side to side.

now a fully functional fan WILL NOT move horizontally in any direction, you'll only have vertical play of about 5mm to allow for the sleeve bearing.

if your card is suffering with one of these loose fans, it WILL move horizontally & vertically..... if this is infact the case RMA it (but i'd wait a while unless your vendor has stock or you'll be waiting a year..lol)

if you find the fan is NOT causing the noise, it could be the sound coming from the transistors on the card, this usually only happens under load, but im not sure if its a viable RMA issue..??

have a check & let us know..:)
