Hi guys! So im having a set of issues first of all im using a hd4850 via hdmi to my samsung 46"lcd. I just got a new mobo asrock (k10n78d) and when I start up for the first time everything is good until it installs a video driver, it then reboots then stalls at a black screen right after the windows is loading splash screen. I can boot into safe mode in which I uninstall all video drivers and it will boot into windows normally but if I install even an official ati driver it will stick on the black screen. Any ideas guys?

How do you have your display connected? If it's not straight forward, try connecting a regular display straight to the card and see if anything changes.

It also wouldn't hurt to re-seat the video card, re-attach the power, etc etc. Be certain you're plugged into your card, and worst case disable any onboard video in the bios.

I have it plugged via DVI/HDMI dongle into my samsung amp then out into my samsung 46"lcd when it works I use my custom EDID for the amp, but for this particular moment its plugged straight into my tv with hdmi. Thats the thing I got this new motherboard from newegg so I can unlock the fourth core on my PII X3 and never had this problem before installing this, point being is its lacking onboard video. :o

Its so wierd I know its the video card in some way because anytime I install (or windows installs) a set of drivers it reboots and the boot fails by either freezing at the windows splash screen or screen blacks out after the splash logo.

It's certainly something with the driver, or at least when trying to load it, although I'm not certain that's the cause of the issue.

The card worked just fine on the other board, right? Do you have another system you can test the card in? And is the fan spinning up on the card?

I'm kind of brain dead, I just need to think, any other info you can think of will help. There are a number of really smart people here that may chime in as well.

Well my previous mobo I got with my cpu in a combo at fry's electronics it is a GIGABYTE ,M61PME-S2P and it is a crappy mobo but it worked, now I have the ASRock K10N78D that I just picked up off newegg for a penny. I am running latest bios which is 1.80 installed latest chipset drivers direct from site specifically for W7. Ive had no problems before with the 4850 I know its an old card but its the only desktop I have, I am actually on my laptop until I get my desktop running. Thanks for the quick reply Rham you guys are awesome!

Similar Problem

I just sent an EVGA card back to mfgr. It gave me a black screen on a cold boot. No loss of DVI sig warning or anything. Screen just went black. Win 7 was there because when I did get it to boot I would get the "windows was not shut down properly". A spare card I had fixed the problem. This is not exactly what you are describing. But it could be the card (regardless of age).

Yea age is def a factor I think its time to upgrade just forking out the cash for a new one is a pain seing as its close to christmas. Ill have to wait till I get paid at the beginning of January, but I was looking at the 6850, 180 bucks and seems pretty rock solid for an ATI ahem I mean AMD card lol. I just wanted to see if there was a possible fix for this seing as like anyone else I wanna keep this thing alive for as long as possible.

I also get the windows was not shutdown properly notification on boot.

What happens if you uninstall the card completely, and remove all ATI software? On reboot, before windows can install a driver, does it work? And if so, once at the desktop, windows will install the drivers and notify you that the device is ready, does this happen normally?

If you're using 'any' overclocking, or game profile software at all, remove it. If you're running audio through the card, default back to the onboard or pci audio.

Also have a look in the BIOS and load defaults.

Yea if I uninstall the card/drivers thats the only way I can actually boot normally, then when I boot back into windows it installs, asks for a restart then thats when the problem occurs and it blanks out. This is a fresh install of W7
