I have just installed windows 7 on my pc (a clean install from xp) my pc and hardware was running fine on xp but since I upgraded to win 7 I keep getting a “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” warning pop up, its really bad its happens 50 something times in the last few hours!!! You get a freeze and or a black screen then it works again for a few minutes.

As soon as I try and go on the internet with IE 8within seconds it does it. It will also do it if I start doing stuff on the desktop as well or even if I am typing a MS word doc so its not just IE 8.

The graphics card is a Sapphire HD 3850 AGP I have tried the latest 8.671.0.0 drivers but it is really bad with these installed it completly crashes and blue screens and restarts so I am currently using the ones windows update put on which is 8.632.1.2000, it still freezez lots but no blue screens so it is a little better.

Has anyone got a fix for this because my new win 7 pc is currently unusable until I get a stable driver sorted.

This is my first post ever so any help will be very gratefully received.

Welcome to seven forums Ballie:Unfortunately your board is based on the Nforce 2 chipset which is to old. Windows 7 won't run on the NF3 so your going to have problems running seven with your system. You might get lucky with some of the advise in this sticky http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/35299-install-agp-drivers-hd-3850-3650-2400-pro.html But I wouldn't get my hopes up. You can try and do what others have been told to try such as having the latest bios, chipset and disabling any ports your not using like floppy, serial, parallel, com ect. Sorry Fabe

thefabe,

Thank you for your time, why didn't the windows 7 upgrade tell me that!

So are you saying I will need to buy a new mother board, processor, ram and graphics card (because my card is AGP and I assume all new boards will be pci/e) and what about my pcu?

If I do go ahead and buy all this will I have to do another clean install of xp first then the win 7 upgrade?

Hi Ballie. nForce2 is too old as TheFabe has said. NVIDIA dropped support for nForce3 and below and never even created a Vista drivers for the CPU to AGP bridge, which is the crux of your issue.

Your only hope is to update the bios and chipset drivers. The chipset driver updating is going to be next to impossible or if not, impossible, due to what I said above.

Ballie, as far as I can see, the problem happens to ALL platforms and ALL video platforms.
I have brand new ASUS+Intel+HD4870+quite powerful PSU, but it happened to me too,
mostly in 3D games.

So far the method with removing one of two memory modules helps. Other ones
like disabling some power/sleep options and switching Aero off did not work.

The problem is somewhere in Win7/DX11 + memory tandem. We just have to wait
for MS to fix it.

Everyone including M/S are telling me that the N/F 2 boards don't support win 7 well with the Sapphire HD 3850 AGP graphics card it doesn't as it keeps crashing as my post says.

HOWEVER, I have removed the Sapphire HD 3850 AGP card and installed a very old nvidia card, windows is just listing it as a "Standard VGA graphics adapter" it only gives a score of 1 but the pc now works just fine!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not installed any chipset drivers or graphics drivers I am just letting win 7 manage it all.

Error 4101 display driver stopped responding... FIX

Error 4101 display driver stopped responding... FIX
Hi
Prior to the Error 4101

I was running Vista 64, this problem was not present. I then did a CLEAN install onto Windows 7 updated all drivers including Chipset then the dreaded “display driver has stopped responding but has now recovered “started to appear during 2d and 3d applications, under event viewer I located the error 4101.

My current system is running stable by following this sequence.

UAC ENABLED
POWER MANAGMENT SET TO HIGH

1. Uninstall all GPU related drivers/ and ADOBE FLASH
2. Turn of PC (not at wall)
3. Clear CMS
4. Boot allow windows to load
5. Shut down then Turn off pc (at wall)
6. Remove GPU and PCI cards
7. Re-install
6. Restart
7. Hit del (load bios)
8. Reset to defaults
9. Load windows
10. Install 9.3 ATI (for me vista 64_win_7 64)
11. Alter TDR in registry set to 0
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/wddm_timeout.mspx
12. Look for unsupported monitor d-word change to 0
(Should still be under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers )
13. Restart (happy gaming)

Prior to this, Bioshock and all other games would freeze after 3-7 mins, last night I gamed solid for an hour no freeze.

Ps. I think it is either unsupported monitor modes on windows 7 (1680 by 1050) or the TDR function. Although 1680 by 1050 is detected by CCC and windows, there may still be a compatibility issue. Any hows it’s now working.
I don’t think it is adobe flash plug-in, UAC or power management.

If this works for you spread the word around the community.

ATI radeon has stopped responding and has recovered

Hello,
I just bought an Imac and am trying to run Windows7 through bootcamp. I am having the same trouble with my drivers as many posts in Windows 7 - black screen and freeezing and little blue squares everywhere. However, I have no clue what these threads mean. What should I do? Any help is appreciated.
The message claims that I have an ATI Radeon driver.

At first I thought this was a Imac problem. I am glad to find out that it is a windows 7 problem.
Thanks!

Found a ( possible) solution

I have an Ati HD3870 and had the same thing, black screen, freeze.
Tried everything, newer/older drivers, bios, motherboard drivers, switch Aero on/off, nothing helped.
Then i thought, if its a TDR problem, and win7 not tolerate any hicups in the GPU, i may try to downclock it a bit.
So i opened CCC and set GPU clock from 777 to 750MHz, and ram clock from 1126 to 1050Mhz. And voila problem gone!!!! I could play for hours and no problem!!

Oh man, thank you so much for this! I was totally pissed at my 4870, I thought it finally died since I have had lots of problems with its VRM (voltage regulator mod) because of inappropriate cooling by third party coolers. Not a single game could run for more than 2 seconds, then my screen went off and I got that error. I had almost dumped this one and get a new one. Now I underclocked it all the way down and it works, will experiment with the highest stable value. Thanks.

I have 2 systems an Intel I7 that works fine with either my Gforce 580 or my ATI 5870. I just built an AMD 1100 6 core and with both vid cards I get the "display driver stopped responding." Have tried virtually everything including sending my Gigabyte 990 Mobo in for repair. No probs found. Now Im going to try what TheSproutKing recomends. Or the AMD is on the scrap pile and back to the I7 860.
