Have you tried using Windows Update to install/update the latest driver from Microsoft? Also if that doesn't work, you could try running a program called Driver Sweeper (as an administrator) to clear out any old drivers.

windows update did not find anything, and i dont have a display tab under the hardware manager. i have confirmed that the driver fails to install due to not decteting the card

I would try powering down the system, removing the card, and putting it back in. Or at the very least checking to make sure it's seated all the way in its socket.

If that doesn't work, then I'd still try cleaning out any old drivers with Driver Sweeper.

Is it giving you a specific error when you try to install the drivers? Or just crashing/hanging?

To my knowledge, 64bit is actually using x86, or at least that's what his system specs/original post indicate.

64bit, what does the window that opens in Firefox say? Does it give you any kind of error number?

Unless someone else has another idea, I'd almost suggest reinstalling Windows 7, clean install (not an upgrade), and make sure you're using the official release from Microsoft.

Yeah, it seems like 4 is your best bet. It would be a clean install too. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Hello 64 bit, renthor gives good advice.
When you clean install Win7x64, you'll be offered ati drivers from Microsoft Update. It's fine to install them. (drivers only. There is no ccc.)

NEXT, you'll want to get new driver package now available.

Go to ATI & get latest driver for Win7x64 for 4870 card. Now there is a new package available, with ccc.

As hardmack mentioned, this is the driver file you want:

beta_w7-64_8-56-1-081203a-72489.exe
