I've tried installing the OS two times, both times my video card has not been recognized. It was properly recognized in the following builds: 7000, 7048, 7057, 7068, 7077. I've tried using ATi Catalyst and also used the following process suggested on techPowerUp! Forums - Powered by vBulletin with no luck:

1, Uninstall existing drivers through Control Panel, reboot in safe mode and run Driver Sweeper to clean up, then:

2, Go here and download the 61.1mb package

3, Go here and download Mobility Modder the install it

4, Go here to download the update, and extract the file into the Mod Tool Directory, overwriting the previous file

5, Run the ATI driver package you downloaded earlier, then cancel after it has been extracted (when you see a black window with orange buttons)

6, Run the Mobility Modder, pointing to the driver folder e.g: C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu

7, When complete, close mobility modder, navigate yourself to the above folder and run setup.exe

8, Go to C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\ Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF

And open CH_76829.inf

Go down to where it says:

[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0]

And change it to

[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]

9, At the end it will most likely fail, however, before rebooting, go to device manager, right click and and click update driver, click browse my computer for software, then click browse and point to:
C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF

10, Click next and it should install the driver. Reboot and all should be okay! :D

I also had a hard time with installing a driver for my Dell E1505 which came with a x1400 driver. Tried everything nothing worked. So I got the driver via filehippo and installed the 9.2 drivers and rebooted. Now I have the preferred driver and aero (yippee). If it doesn't, ye may have to install the driver manually.

Yeah, the newer 'Win7' drivers don't work that well for the older cards. Anything pre 9.2 seems fine though.

For reference, the first solution worked even without removing previous drivers first. A few steps are also not necessary anymore.

Step 4, downloading the update isn't necessary anymore, since the update is already in the new version downloaded in step 3.

The package from step 2 is now a different one than described. Therefore step 8 and 9 can't be done anymore.

I tried the bumptop solution first, but it didn't work for me. I have a Thinkpad R60 with a X1400.

Just an update to the above procedure

I have a Lenovo T60 with ATI Mobility x1400 graphics and am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64

When you click the link to go for the 9.3 61mb package it takes you to a later version. There is a link to the right on that page to go to previous releases. You can find the 9.3 package there. So I went forward using the 9.3 package as it is still two years newer than my current driver (latest from lenovo site is 2007). I followed the instructions forward but to expand on the part where you browse for the driver you need to actually navigate to the .inf file you edited. You will be prompted that the author can not be verified. You will see a second warning about this same potential issue. After saying OK twice the driver was installed and I have reached success.

Now I am going to try to do this on new versions to see how far I can go. If I have any great success i will update.
