I recently upgraded my graphics card to a Sapphire 4890 OC, just wondering is it possible to use my old EVGA 8800GT card just for physics in games like mirror's edge. So have the ati card for rendering graphics and the nvidia card doing gpu accelerated physics? I'm using Win 7 RTM x64

i really don't think you can. it seems too hairy to even contemplate. your cpu should be able to handle the physx.

but please correct me, somebody, if i'm wrong.

I think I read somewhere that with nvidia's new drivers as soon as it detects a non-nvidia gpu it disables physics, but supposedly it works with the old drivers. I've seen a few videos on youtube of it working on windows 7, so i'm not really sure if I should give it a try. Don't really want to ditch my 8800GT just yet.

I don't think an 8800GT + PhysX is going to provide ANY sort of visual/performance advantage that you would be missing with an OC'd 4890.

That said, I still don't believe it's possible to use ATI and nVidia cards simultaneously like that.

I think I might give this a try like right now, lol. If I were which driver set should I use, could I use a older driver set then just update the physics software? My 4890 Is connected using the dvi cable, so I guess i'll just use the vga cable to connect my 8800GT?

I think I got it to work almost perfect :D If I select display 1, it uses the 4890, fluidmark (physx benchmark) only got a score around 1800. If I extend the display's it uses both cards and fluidmark got a score of 7719. Only one minor problem, I don't have 2 monitors so when I select extend display's I can drag a program or the mouse off the screen, so what I done is drag the #2 display to the bottom right corner of #1 display, that way the only way to move the mouse off the screen is in the bottom right corner which is almost perfect.

Keeps going, and going, and going.......
At one point in time PhysX was its own company with its own PCI card. About 2 years ago Nvidia bought them out, to me a kinda cheap move. But it made it cheaper to purchase those PCI chips. They were about $99.99. Then when nvidia bout them out they started building them into there graphics cards.

So theoretically, they functioned as a stand alone once why cant they now just under a second graphics card?

Because Nvidia is having a pout, and like a little kid taking their ball and going home. Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that ATI is going to have DX11 parts out several months before Nvidia does.

Nvidia claim it's because it makes driver support more difficult.

I say it's a poor marketing and developmental decision with a hint of sour grapes.
