ATI or Nvidia?

Personally, I prefer nVidia. Though I hear they have bad support for older games. I remember trying to play an old RPG game on my old XP box with my 9400 GT and the shading was all messed up. A friend of mine has a 9600 GT but can't play his favorite game because apparently all newer nVidia cards won't work with it.

I personally never had any issues running any games when I had my 9600gt so a lot will depend on the rest of your config.
There will be no right and wrong answer here but the general consensus is if you have an intel chip then go with nvidia gpu and like wise, if you have amd chip go with ati.
Both card manufacturers do any equally good job, you just got to chose what you think will be right for you.
I chose what ever is in my case at the time.

I recently switched to the ati 5850 after being a long time nvidia user since TNT2 days. Mainly because the 5800 series was affordable and powerful and the fermi cards are taking their time. Affordable nvidia fermi cards wont be with us until the end of the year.

switched ATI with an HD3850AGP to replace my 7600GT, never looked back since - ATI's drivers are much improved
currently running twin 4890's in Crossfire - it's a flier, especially with the new Crossfire add-in from ATI
- guess it's horses for courses, but the ATI drivers make their cards a real alternative choice - they're much better than they used to be..

But I wanted a big jump so now I am on ATI with a 5850 and its really quiet and doesn't suck up so much juice. I still very much like the Phsyx and cuda. Used some programs and it was great. Only wish something would be open source (PhysX/ CUDA) so both companies could use it and improve everything a whole but a company is a company and a company wants money no matter what.
