I'm running Windows 7 Pro x32bit with 4GB RAM and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DCP 4400+, 2200 Mhz. My Samsung SyncMaster 2443 uses an ATI Radeon Xpress Series (0x5954) Adapter and is uninstalled when it's time to install the proper drivers/software for the ATI RADEON HD 4850 Graphics Card (PCIe). After the reboot if I get a screen at all, it's effected by the weight of the card itself and must be adjusted by hand until the "green" goes away. After that is taken care of, within 5 minutes I get the BSOD!!! The Blue Screen Of Death informs me that a recent change to the Graphics card or adapter caused the problem. The computer is beyond the system requirements and should work fine, right? Any suggestions on how to handle this, steps to try or something I'm just outright forgetting here?

Thanks in advance any help that you can provide!

hi x51shadow, and welcome to sevenforums,

er, i think you are missing a poll option (or maybe two).

how about 'no - never had a problem with it?'

i used to have one and it worked great. at the time it was an absolute bargain, and i loved it. i only upgraded to a 4890 after i bought a 1920x1080 monitor, and found the 4850 didn't quite have enough oomph to push all those pixels about.

i sold it to a friend and he's still happy playing modern games with it on his smaller monitor.

x51shadow, full system specs of the computer in question would help.

Also did you remember to connect the 6 pin (3x2) power connector on the card to the power supply? And is the power supply strong enough for that card (make and model of the power supply would help)?

I have one, and I'm going to sell it soon since I upgraded, but it has been a great card for me. Some of your system details don't make sense...like the ATI Xpress card. First off, the monitor doesn't add this...it is in the system somehow...possibly on board the mobo. See if that can be disabled, as it may be causing a conflict. Or, load the drivers for it anyway, even if the monitor is connected to your 4850.

If you are getting a BSoD, write down the codes and do some searching on them. That will likely tell you if the problem is a software conflict or a bad card.

Sounds like he has a conflict. Most AMD MB have built in graphics. He probably needs to go into bios and tell bios whether to use the IGP or the card.

I'm using a Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU. The GC is powered via a 6-Pin PCI-E power connector. The Xpress 200 is automatically installed when the monitor is connected. I'll post the BSoD codes later tonight. I do uninstall the Xpress 200 before installing the 4850, so I'm not sure if there's a conflict with the computer trying to automatically install it again. I'll atempt to disable the on board graphics through bios again. I'm using an HP dx5150 MT. The 4850 is 512MB GDDR3.

I'm using a Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU.
That there is probably the cause of the problem more than anything. It is an OK power supply as a replacement for low power that come in pre-built computers, but nit really up to running a video card like the 4850. Specs on it can be found here,

Newegg.com - Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX12V V2.2 Intel Core i7 Compliant Dual 80mm Fans Full Cable Sleevings Power Supply

and a not so glowing review here,

Thermaltake Purepower 430W NP Power Supply Review | Hardware Secrets

from the conclusion,

This is an old ATX power supply where the manufacturer added a 24-pin motherboard connector, SATA power cables and a PCI Express auxiliary power cable to make it compatible with computers available today. Simply updating the cables doesn’t make this power supply an updated product. This is so true that this power supply is listed as ATX12V 1.03 by Thermaltake, and not as ATX12V 2.x, despite the presence of the 24-pin motherboard connector and the 6-pin PCI Express auxiliary power cable for video cards.

The main problem with this power supply is that it can’t deliver its labeled power. It is, in fact, a 350 W power supply.
All things considering might want to give serious consideration to getting a good quality power supply of at least 500W if you want to run that card.

The 430w was an upgrade believe it or not. I had just bought it less then a month ago. I'll give it a shot though. I'm thinking 750W+. I would also like suggestions on here to work out the seating issue for the graphics card itself and its weight. The PSU suggestions are very helpful and will be the first thing I try as soon as I can. I think I need to replace the PCIe connector on the board. I think the lock tab is broken.

i like modular psu's, so you only have the leads that you need, not the whole rat's nest of cables like a traditional power supply...

Could you suggest one? Or is this one I have to "build" myself based on needs? Also, the physical PCIe lock tab has broken off leading to seating issues. Where/how can I replace this?

looking at newegg, it seems that most modern hi-power psu's are modular. they come with a bunch of leads, and you only plug in what you need.

i don't know how to replace a pcie slot though...if budget isn't an issue, maybe a new mobo?

also please send a new ninja-pc to mickey megabyte, devon, england please ;)
